BA/MD Programs chances?

Race: Indian (US Citizen, born in the USA)
Gender: Male
Location: Illinois
School: Naperville Central
Class of 2009

GPA: 4.52 Weighted, 3.881 Unweighted (straight As first semester senior year would bring me to 3.898). My school doesn't have class rank anymore. I do believe they maintain top 5% though, which I am pretty darn sure I'm in. The school will release what the highest GPA in the class is though, which is about a 4.64, give or take a tiny bit.

Test Scores:

PSAT: 213...National Merit Semi-Finalist cutoff was 213 last year in Illinois...but I'm not sure that I'll make it for this year

SAT: 2250 (CR: 800, Math: 730, Writing: 720). Only taken once, will probably retake since I can definitely get an 800 in math (off day I guess).

ACT: 34 (Grammar: 35, Math: 36, Reading: 33, Science: 33). Taken twice, will probably take again in September since I'm confident that I can get better scores in Reading and Science.

SAT IIs
-Math ii: 780
-Chemistry: 780
-US History: 720

AP Tests:
-AP Gov: 5
-AP Chem: Waiting on score
-AP Computer Science AB: Waiting on score
-AP US History: Waiting on score

Volunteering:

72 hours @ hospital (Summer before Junior Year)
8 1/2 hours misc stuff for NHS
Doing another 80 hours @ hospital this summer

I have a job this summer, if that helps at all.

I haven't finished going through the giant list of BA/MD programs yet, but I'd mostly be interested in ones in schools that have large scholarships available in addition the BA/MD program. University of Miami, Virginia Commonwealth University, and University of Southern California meet the aforementioned criteria. What are my chances in applying to those schools?

How good are the schools I previously mentioned anyway? I'm not really sure, and I'm not having the easiest time finding out.

Are there any other schools that meet those criteria? What would my chances be at those schools?

great stats, but low medical EC’s. hype up the hospital volunteering and mini med school in your essays, and then you’ll have a great shot at those programs.

go look for some research this summer or something or shadow a doctor. pack up the medical EC’s quick if you wanna hav the best chancessss.

Hurray for midwesterners! The one thing I don’t see (And maybe you haven’t talked about) is leadership. You have lots of club activity, but where do you stand in them? Have you taken on any responsibility in them?

Also, to save yourself some sanity, you don’t need to go into that much detail with clubs, lol. It’s easier just to log hours/week and what positions you hold. It’s really all colleges are interested in, too.

I’m not sure I’d be able to find research at this point. How would I go about finding any opportunities?

ppenguin757: Aside from captains (which aren’t even in some of those clubs), there are no leadership positions…would it be enough to stress that I myself succeeded rather then just going along for the ride?

It might be, but it’s hard to. Like when I applied, I was able to put down a clear leadership position for most of my extracurricular activities (EIC of my school paper, Team Captain of Science Olympiad, etc.), but for the ones I couldn’t, I just put down “varsity team member,” or just “member.” I think what I used to stress was the number of hours per week that I worked with each EC and I tried to demonstrate in my essays how passionate I was about them. I think as long as you can show that you cared about them all and you weren’t just randomly in them, it should be a solid start.

In terms of stats, I think you have pretty solid ones. It sounds like you have a really rigorous schedule, so that’s always a plus, but it’s only going to get you to the interview stage.

At USC, it’s my understanding that they look for the overall person, not necessarily who has the most medical experience. I mean, I’d done zero research and I admitted in my interview that I knew pretty much nothing about the health care system in America and I still got into the program, lol. Most of the Bacc/MDs do end up with scholarships (I interviewed and got a full ride), but those are done through the school, so I’m guessing your major would put you in LAS? Either way, it’s best to think about what you like doing and reflect on it so it can really come out in your essays and, hopefully, the interview.

Thanks for the advice. Its really helpful!

But, what’s LAS?

college of letters, arts, and sciences

I want to know what/which BS/MD program i can get into with my stats, I dont really like D.O’s but if i cant get into MD, DO is my backup;no offense.
