BA/MS Program

I'm strongly considering applying ED to Northwestern this year, and I have some questions about the combined BA/MS program in Computer Science. Poli Sci and Comp Sci are the two fields I'm really interested in. I was wondering if it would be possible to major in Poli Sci while taking a lot of CS courses and then take a fifth year to get a masters in CS

Has anyone done this program? Or just know anything about it? Would you advise me to do this rather than do a traditional undergrad education and apply to a different grad school?

Also, what other schools offer a program like this? This might be enough to push NU to the top of my list.

Thanks!

I’d like to do the program myself (I’m WCAS CS/French '12). Most schools offer some form of combined Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in CS, the details just vary (if memory serves, at the U of Washington, the catch was that you got both degrees when you were finished with everything). Thanks for reminding me, because I need to get started on deciding if it’s for me as well, and if so I’ll need to be applying for that this year! :O

I assume you’ve seen this, but just in case: [EECS Main :: BS/MS and BA/MS Programs](http://www.eecs.northwestern.edu/academics/undergraduate/degrees/bsms-bams/)

I would say that you should do a fair chunk of undergrad work before you really make a call on grad work: you can’t know until you’ve been a part of it whether the department is for you. Since grad CS requires a lot of specialization, you’ll want to know what areas you’re heading towards from your undergrad experience, which aims to create a broadly skilled programmer.

Me, I may end up doing something with the research I’m doing now for CollabLab[/url”>http://collabolab.northwestern.edu/]CollabLab, which cropped up out of nowhere but turns out to be quite fascinating.

In research labs like ‘CollabLab,’ is fairly easy to join the research group and get paid for it (work-study)?

Sorry for the ad-hoc question!

can an MMSS major do the BA/MS in econ?

@Glenny, I responded to a job opening posted on the ACM student list, so I am paid (I’m not work-study). I’m not getting any course credit or anything for it, but it doesn’t really matter to me whether I do or don’t - I’m learning a fair amount from working there regardless. I’m hoping to find something related to what I’m working with now by the time I’m doing grad school (I’m in something of a supporting role for the grad students there right now), but for the moment I’m just payin’ the bills.
