Hi there! I’m a high school senior currently very confused on my future to be completely honest. I’ve been accepted at every school I’ve applied to so far but pretty much all have been for a BA in Theatre. I’ve always dreamed of myself in a BFA Acting program but after auditioning and being told by my top choice school that I seem like a better fit for their BA program, I’m a bit confused.
I’m attending Ohio Unified auditions next month so I’m hoping to get some more opinions but who knows. I’ve always dreamed of performing and have been told I’m talented enough, however my directors say I would make a fabulous Stage Manager/Director so I really don’t know what to think. I know there are many BA programs where the students work very closely with BFA students but I’m just not sure.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Keep in mind that most schools are just starting their auditions and a lot will happen over the next 2 months. People are rarely accepted at all their schools.
Also be aware that some schools let you audition for the BFA after you have completed a semester or two (not all schools, you must check on this though). So starting as a BA isn’t the end of the road.
But a BA isn’t all bad either. It really depends upon the school. My D is a BA theatre student trying to focus on performance and she is happy with her options. But it does depend upon the school - in some options for BAs are more limited.
Stage Management/Director is a different degree and focus. But many schools have similar or same classes for first year so you can get in and learn more about what you like and then maybe change if needed. BAs typically have more flexibility for changing their focus, but can be done for BFAs too.
