So…if you are interested in pursuing another area of theater interest (in my D’s case it is Theater Admin) along with MT, a BA program would be better right? Because I am to believe that the BFA programs lead little room for anything else but dedicated MT classes? I am therefore looking at the BA programs with MT concentrations, etc then? Sorry if this is a dumb question…lol
There are some BFA programs that will allow you to minor or perhaps double major in Arts Administration while pursuing an MT BFA. Two that immediately come to mind are Rider and Ohio Northern. I’m sure there are others as well.
If you are willing to pay for an extra year in school, you can probably accomplish that goal at many schools - it just may take more than 4 years.
Viterbo makes it possible for BFA MTs to graduate in four years with a double major in Arts Administration.
I’ll offer this list up again as a resource: http://www.artsadministration.org/find-a-program/undergraduate-programs/ This lists many (but it is not completely exhaustive) arts admin programs around the world. Since Arts Admin programs tend to be less plentiful than MT programs, it may be useful to investigate schools based on which offer the second major rather than MT, and then inquire at the schools directly with regard to double majoring/minoring/graduating in four years.
@theaterwork We are looking at BA’s also for the same reason. Most of the BFA schools I have spoken with have stated it is difficult to double major or even minor and fit in all requirements plus electives. Most theater majors tend to want to take many extra courses in their field also, making a second major even in a BA difficult.
However, some have dual majors built in or list minors that would fit in more easily ( ie…for scheduling purposes) But since a BA typically requires less credits within the major,it does make it more doable within the 4 tear sequence.
I think in many BFA programs it’s hard to do in 4 years even if it’s “doable” because it’s hard to schedule the classes around your others and rehearsals. If you really want a BFA and the other major it will take careful planning and maybe some summer classes or an extra semester or two. Remember to account for the possibilities of rehearsals each evening when your thinking about your schedule. My daughter has typically had 4-5 hour rehearsals in the evenings and there are weekend rehearsals too
It may or may not be possible to graduate from some BA programs in four years either, depending on the rigor of the BA program in terms of the major, and the number of required courses in the second major. Rehearsals in the evenings are common in most BA programs as well, I believe. For example, where I teach there are rehearsals in the evenings generally starting around 6PM or 7PM and going to 10PM or 11PM, as well as 5 - 6 hours of rehearsal one weekend day.
As with everything it is important to check with each school individually. Make sure to ask the department. University admissions may not know.
