1) Get a BA, not a BFA.
2) Preferably in or very near a large city.
3) Have a lot of performance opportunities - either from the program or by an active and running student theater scene
4) Double major in something else other than theater (this is very important)

Northwestern is my top choice right now.
Also I'll probably look at U. Chicago...they don't seem to have a very intense program but University Theater is huuuge.

I love NYU, but I can't double major at the CAS if I'm in Tisch, right? :(

NYU is a BFA just to let you know. You would have to audition as a drama major and then once you are in you can double major. You couldn’t double major if you go into CAS and then try to do it. I would suggest Sarah Lawrence for you. You could do pretty much anything you want too and has an open curriculum. Good Luck!

A great idea would be to look at the major BFA programs, and see which ones offer BA programs. Many of the BFA programs have strong BA programs, such as the two I previously mentioned, and USC. However, it might hard to get parts as a BA in certain schools, it really depends on where you go.

Pace and Marymount in NYC both offer BA programs. Boston College is a BA right in Boston, I believe Tufts and Brandeis also are BA programs and are close to Boston. Temple in Philadelphia is a BA as well. On the west coast UCLA, and USC offer BAs, as does UC-Irvine… all are in or near LA.

There are most likely many other programs that will fit the bill as well. Possibly try looking at the programs at schools in majors cities that interest you.

Irvine has a BA, and is 45 minutes from LA, but it’s actually pretty inconvenient and expensive to get to LA if you don’t have a car. The train station is pretty far away, and you have to take Amtrak, which is relatively expensive.

NU is a fantastic choice as it fits all four criteria that you mentioned. Have you thought about UMich? Michigan also offers a BA in Theatre. There’s also Yale.

You cannot double major at UCLA because its too many units. UCLA is a BA, but run like a BFA, so its a lot of units. You can, however, minor. My daughter is getting her BA in Theatre/Acting Specialization and her minor in Film.
