BA Theatre at Elon

Does anyone have any information or experience they can share about the BA Theatre program at Elon. My D loved the campus and received an academic acceptance but rejection from the MT program. She is seriously considering the BA at Elon as a back up and would love to know if anyone has had any good or bad experiences there. She is also considering a double major that would be easy to do at Elon. I think the next 6 weeks would be a lot easier if she felt her fallback plan was a good one.
Thanks.

Hi Shelsdad
Last year my son was also passed over for the MT program but decided to attend Elon because he loved the school. He started out as a BA Theatre Studies Major but has since changed to BA Theatre Design and Production and absolutely loves it. He says the faculty is wonderful. Prior to changing to TDP he asked about reauditioning for his sophomore year in MT and was told his chances were slim to none. I do not think he spent enough time in TS to decide whether it was a viable option.

I know quite a few of the BA theatre students are double majors, often in something like communications. My son's girlfriend is a BFA dance/BA theatre studies.

If your student loves Elon, as we all do, and the BA theatre studies at Elon is your best choice, go with it. However, if the student wants a performance based degree, go with another option, if you have another good option. I understand that students in the BA theatre studies major do not take acting and MT classes with the BFA students but have separate classes that are not really performance based. Also, even though a few BA students have been cast in shows in the past, I believe that the competition would be harder for a BA student to get into a show, now that the size of the BFA classes has increased in recent years, and there are many very talented students in the BFA programs. Hope that helps.

I’m considering this very same thing. Elon’s about the only school I made it into (so far; still waiting on two, but I’m not getting my hopes up) so I’m strongly considering just going into the BA Theatre Studies program. Of course, I wish I was accepted into the MT program but Elon’s got an amazing reputation and I’ve decided to pay my deposit in the meantime.

I’m glad I’ll still be able to act, though the classes won’t be quite the same as the ones offered to BFA students… Though I read that “instructor permission” could get someone into a class; still trying to figure that one out… I was just wondering if anyone knew how possible it would be for me to still continue with singing, at least? I don’t want to let go of that at all, I love it too much. And is it very unlikely for me to try and audition for MT again?

i’m in the same boat. I loved Elon and the reputation it had. but I didn’t get into the MT department. I am going there though because I loved the school…but I am now finding it a difficult to think about NOT doing anything related to theater… any suggestions?

Elon has a great Broadcast Journalism dept.

Saw your comment and we are in that exact spot right now…didn’t get in as MT …considering Theatre studies…can you give me some kind of idea about what his performance choices were, if any? The website makes it seem like there is ample opportunity… thanks!

I have asked the same questions for my D and they usually are not cast in main stage productions but can participate in student run which are many. They can audition for anything though.

As I recall, my son said that even main stage productions have open auditions, so if you have what the faculty is looking for for a certain production, then you have an equal shot. There are many opportunities to audition for student productions. Since my son changed his major to Theatre Design and Production the 1st semester of freshmen year he has hit the ground running and not stopped. At times he misses performing, but the Design faculty and department are amazing. He has made so many contacts with higher ups around the country and has traveled around the USA doing incredible internships. Theatre studies students are able to take performance classes, but they are not with the BFA students.

It was always my understanding that the theatre studies students did not take performance based classes, at least not the ones that the BFA in MT and in Acting take. You might really want to study the curriculum before deciding to go that route.
