BA vs. BFA - Would love some input from Current NU parents or students

I can’t believe I’m having to post this request for advice but I’m in a challenging position with my child as we are closing in (finally) on the time to make decisions. My D has some acceptances at some reputable BFA MT programs. She also recently learned of her acceptance into NU’s School of Communications/Theatre program. For some reason, she has it in her head that there is some negative connotation to going to a school that did not require an audition. She is very well aware of NU’s academic reputation and quality of its students and program. But, she seems to be hesitant to put NU at the top of the list because of the lack of an audition as well as the fact freshman cannot try out for mainstage productions. I already know I need to sit her down and explain that even with schools that let you audition as a freshmen, your odds are still pretty slim when it comes to the more experienced upper classmen. Plus, NU has so many performance opportunities compared to some BFA MT programs where you may only have half-a-dozen such opportunities a year I am getting my ammo together as we prepare to sit down to review her current choices but I am looking for any advice from current NU parents or students regarding the pros of NUs program, not just the stuff you read on the website and in the brochure, but really from an honest day-in-the-life Theatre/MT perspective. Ultimately, the decision is hers but I’m trying my best to give her all the information possible so she can make the best decision.

I’m hoping you’ve gotten some great PMs from current NU families! I know D had all of these same concerns before she made her decision, and now that she’s been meeting (virtually) many of her amazingly experienced and talented classmates for next year (she knows some of their voices from their original Broadway cast recordings) she could not be more excited!

PLEASE HELP FOR AMERICAN UNIVERSITY DC

my d is admitted for the fall as an intended major in theatre (has not auditioned yet), so she will need to audition in October for Musical Theatre.
We understand there is a BA in Musical Theatre and BA in Theatre, both entered into by audition. However we are still very confused… Is there a NONaudition Performance Major for Theatre that she is in now, (as an “intended theatre major”) or that she will be for sure into if the BA auditions are not successful? We have read some posts about some “performance track” and “theatre arts” and “non performing theatre arts” but can’t find any program specifics on the website about these other options besides the two clear BA programs.

We’d appreciate it IMMENSELY if you could shed some light on this…
thank you so much!

@reneemarie – You may have better luck posting your American University question elsewhere, since this area is primarily used by folks with questions about Northwestern.

Hope you get answers!

thank you!
