I have some questions regarding Babson and am going to take a tour this weekend but thought I would try to enlighten myself a bit beforehand.
First off, I am a mediocre students- 3.3 UW and 1710 SAT though all honors/AP classes. However, I am very entrepreneurial minded and have let my schoolwork take the backseat to a lot of business ventures that I have attempted throughout high school. I am involved currently with a very successful venture and am also making excellent progress with one of my own. I am hoping that Babson as such an entrepreneurial minded school will appreciate what I have done and weigh that strongly into my admission process. I would appreciate if anyone has anything to add about that.
Also, I know Babson offers tremendous opportunities in the business world by preparing students well and offering many connections and resources to students. But how is Babson viewed by other college programs? Ideally, I would love to go to Babson undergrad and pursue an MBA closer to home at Wharton. I think both programs would offer very different perspectives on business and thus very interesting together. I expect to do very well in college, and think I can hold around a 3.4 or so, but will going to Babson stand out to other top business programs or is where you went undergrad irrelevant?
Finally, on a more personal level, how is Babson as a student? I know the college is very small and in a somewhat small town, which I like. However I am also looking to branch out a bit more in college and enjoy myself rather than just work and study as I have all through high school. Is Babson the kind of school that gives me those opportunities? Thanks!
Your stats are on the lower end of Babson acceptances. For example from our high school kids with such stats are not admitted. However, if your application is well thought and you manage to shine through you have a chance. Babson is a unique school. You have to visit and decide for yourself. Very small but you can cross register with Olin and Wellesley. It is on the commuter rail to Boston. Make sure you interview with them. Good luck.
We visited Babson last summer. Beautiful campus, nice area but a bit away from town. We went to eat in a restaurant and found quite a lot of retired folks and families who dressed really nice with well-mannered children but a bit up tight at times. It feels like a upper class little town tucked in somewhere away from the rest of the world.
Students there we saw were preppy with a good diversity. But one thing we noticed and D got turned off almost right the way was some people with us in the same tour were a bit over the top. A kid wore a shirt with huge logos all over and we could smell his name brand cologne from 30 feet away. D felt she didn’t belong. The tour guide was fine but she was a bit mono tone and we couldn’t feel any passion the whole time. It’s a huge difference compare to the students in Tufts.
We also bumped into some foreign students who talked in their own language real loud and didn’t seem too friendly to us. The introduction was boring and lacking of the atmosphere D was looking for. The guy that gave the talk wasn’t friendly at all. We said goodbye to him when we left the room and he just stared at us and barely acknowledged us. D didn’t like it at all but it is mostly because D is not a business minded kid and prefers students more like the one we met at Tufts. Fun, quirky, smart and genuine. If you are into business field, I would say it’s definitely one of the best schools in the nation, no doubt.
