Babson College

This is a cool forum....although it would have been very helpful if this was around a while ago......anyhow...

I was recently accepted to Babson College. I would be grateful to hear what you have to say about the school, as not many others in my area know of it.

Thanks,
Matt

Well Dude55 here is everything you need to know about the school in terms of the school itself and its reputation within the business world.

Babson is a business school with a focus on entrepreneurship. If you want to start your own company Babson is the place to go. Babson has been rated the #1 school for Entrepreneurship by U.S. News & World Report for the last 8 years or however many years the ranking for entrepreneurship has been published. Overall the school is ranked #29 for business. If it wasn't for Babson's entrepreneurship program the school would be much lower in the rankings...

Unfortunately there is more to the school than what the rankings say. Babson's other programs such as Business Management, Finance, Accounting etc... could use some help as they are still trailing behind some of the other elite business schools.

Babson's location (Wellesley,MA) and size (approx. 1700 undergrad students) makes it a relatiavely unknown school to most. You will find in the business world many people have heard about it. If you go out to California and tell someone you went to Babson you will hear a lot of "Never heard of it" or something similar.

There is a reason for that. Babson's student body consists of students mainly from the east coast of the U.S. or from other countries (international students). Most of the students come from very very wealthy backgrounds. The size of the school doesn't make it the best place to be in terms of a social life. When the size is combined with the amount of work that is given to students social life takes a back seat.

An advantage to this regional popularity is that if you plan on working somewhere between Washington D.C. and Boston the Babson name should be well recognized by employers. Babson is located just outside of Boston so you will be in proximity to many jobs/internships. As an undergrad at the school you will see more business plans then what a normal MBA would have seen. (You will have a lot of work).

If you plan on working in investment banking you might want to look elsewhere. Babson is a recognized business school and there certainly are graduates that go on to work for Merril Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs etc... However, most of those big name investment banks recruit from more "prestigious schools" such as the Ivies and top 25's. YOu an certainly get those jobs from Babson its just that you probably will have to be ranked very high in your graduating class

If you plan on getting an MBA later on Babson should help you in the process. They have their own graduate school which is a great program but if you are aiming for the top such as Harvard, or Northwestern's Kellogg etc.. it might be tough due to its mainly regional reputation. Overall if you want an MBA from a good school Babson will certainly get you ready but if you want a top MBA program you might have to work a little bit harder.

So overall Babson is a business focused school with an excellence in Entrepreneurship. If you want to get a solid business education that will get you ready for jobs or an MBA but are willing to give up a social life and a mostly regional reputation that might not be recognized by some in the other parts of the country go for it.

Wow. Thank you. Also, I'm applying to Wharton, Tepper, Cornell's AEM, as well as NYU (not Stern), Dartmouth, and UMich.
