Babson, McGill, and Lafayette.

Ok, I just got into these 3.
Which school do you people think is better in terms of prestige, academics, social life, and everything?!

Well, if it comes to prestige, I've never heard of Babson or Lafayette...

McGill is in a world class city and is well regarded internationally.

yeah, mcgill definitely has the prestige of the three...also the academic rigor, from what i've heard

haha wow McGill is so different from the other two. You don't have a preference on the type of college?

I almost applied to Lafayette, and I consider it a good school. McGill has the name recognition but less personal attention. I don't know anything about Babson.

That's a very important point. McGill is a great school all around in a great city, but it expects a lot of independence. If you prefer small classes with a lot of attention from the profs, it may not be the school for you.

Yeah I know they're diffrent, but I wanted a small school. I just applied to McGill as a sort of safety I guess. I love Babson, but what I change my mind about studying business. Lafayette is a good school, but Babson is better. I don't know, Im just confused I guess haha.
Help?

Why do you think Babson is "better"? Look at that word very carefully and when you define it, you will know which college you want to go to.

There's no way Babson is "better" than Lafayette.

Babson only edges the other 2 out in these fields:
- entrepreneurship
- most other business things
- small campus
- the movie 'College Saga' was made there and that's kickass

I don't know anything about lafayette but i know McGill is world class in almost everything. That and a nice great (big) campus in montreal. Great social scene en overal great school.

Babson probably stands out if you are all about the whole hands-on learning thing. Small class, campus was okay. If you are asian, there are quite a number of asians there. If you are international, there are plenty of intls there too. Prestige-wise it hasnt gained much recognition yet, despite all that talk about being top in entrepreneurship. Class-size is manageable, about 400+ each intake.

McGill is a great canadian school. Prestige- and academia-wise. Big school though.

Some things you might have to ask yourself
-would you like a big/small school?
-near a city or not? (babson is 3hrs away from parsons, ny)
-campus life
-academics

I am a Lafayette alum. I've heard of McGill but don't know much about it, and I live near Babson. These are 3 very different schools, I'm curious about how you ended up applying to all 3 of them.

What do you want to major in? Babson is a business school, Lafayette is a Liberal Arts College. I would think that would narrow your decision right there.

All 3 have great reputations.

(Scandel-less, I don't know where Parsons NY is, but Babson is in the Boston suburbs. Lafayette is in Easton, a small city - large town about 1 1/2 hours from NYC and 2 hours from PHilly.)

Everyone seems to be asking how I applied to these 3 schools lol. Well I want to study something around the lines of Economics, Int Economics, Int Business. Lafayette has an amazing program in Int Eco. Babson does in Eco and Int Business. and McGill in Eco and Int development.

I really want a small community, but I love McGill, excpet that its so huge.
Babson is next to Boston which is what I want, BUT its too business oriented.
Lafyette is great, but way too far from Boston. I'm kinda reluctant about it cause Ive never been to pennsylvania before. The others I've been to, and I know lots of people there. help?

Lafayette is right next to the Delaware River, which is the border with NJ. Weather-wise, it's not very different from the Boston area, except Spring comes a little sooner. Culture-wise, not much difference from Boston area.

If you've never been there, how can you make a good decision? Take a drive down there and check it out! If you can't go by car, take the bus to NYC (but not the Fung Wah bus, unless you're suicidal). There are busses from the NYC Port Authority bus terminal to Easton PA that leave almost hourly. Lafayette's website can guide you to the info on how to get there. It's about a 6 hour drive from Boston, including traffic - not exactly the far side of the moon.

Also, on this discussion board, click on "colleges" and go to the Lafayette discussion (they're listed alphabetically). There's a student at Lafayette named Justin (aka Candyman) who answers questions. There's also a few other Lafayette students/potential students/parents. They can tell you about it.

I don't know how far from Boston Babson is but i must tell you that Easton ,PA. is culture lite. It is a small town that I would not call a college town. If Babson is close to Boston then there is no comparison between Easton and Boston.

That being said Lafayette is a great school and is about an hour and one half drive from Philly. We live in the philly burbs and our D just was offered a Marquis scholarship at Lafayette. One thing is for sure the winters are longer and colder at McGill. PA. is a great state with great outdoor offerings for hiking, camping, boating, skiing etc. If you have a car or a friend with a car visiting Philly once a month will be a great treat.

Dana's Dad

Thanks for all the help, but visiting PA isnt as easy as it is for you guys lol. I'm an international student, I dont live in the states.

So, all my info is from websites.

same here. i might however visit DC in the autumn break to scope out AU.

IMHO (and I'll be killed for saying this), but I don't think Babson has the reputation of either of the other two schools. Check out their profiles on the CollegeBoard website; their average SATs are well below the other two.

Then, in imy opinion, it comes down to whether you want a large, urban university, or a small, liberal arts college. I agree with the other posters; very different types of campuses.

Lafayette probably has the best Greek scene?

If you're worried about babson being too business oriented I believe you can cross register and take classes at a few other schools near by.
