Hey forum
i was told by my brother that babson had an excellent entrepreneurship program. and in the rankings from us news and world report it ranked 1st for business… are the other programs at babson (i.e. marketing, international business, finance) worthwhile… or is it mainly entrepreneurship that makes the school? Any comments will be appreciated.

I think you should research each concentration closely. But as I know Babson is strong in all these (International business, marketing, finance) concentrations. if you trust ranking you should also know that in the same ranking (US news) Babson is ranked 23rd in marketing and 24th in best undergraduate B-schools.

“Or is it mainly entrepreneurship that makes the school?”

I don’t think so, during your first two years you don’t choose concentrations. first year student takes FME (Foundation management experience) and except entrepreneurship and elements of management and amrketing students are taught basic accounting and finance principles. After this you take IME1, IME2 and IME3.
IME 1 includes: macro econ and financial accounting. IME 2 includes marketing, finance, organizational behavior and operations, and micro econ. IME 3 includes strategy, managerial accounting, operations and org. management 2.
I strongly consider this school and I want to study finance and entrepreneurship. If you look at finance courses and faculty you will see that Babson has a great finance program. I have been accepted to many schools which are ranked higher than Babson in finance. And if I trust ranking I should go to these schools. But after a little research I found out that Babson has a great Finance program. Look closely at Stephan D. Cutler Investment Management Center. There is the special program called Bloomberg University Certification Program.

“Babson College students will learn sophisticated financial analysis skills by participating in the Bloomberg University Certification Program.

Babson students will be the first college students in the Northeast to participate in the program, which is available to the commercial marketplace for traders and investment professionals.

“This pilot program will give students practical, sophisticated financial analysis skills and will enhance their marketability upon graduation,” says Finance Professor and Cutler Center Director Steven Feinstein. "This is another way Babson students prepare for careers in the investments industry -- learning to use the same information and analytical tools used by professionals.”

The content of the program will be Equity orientated focusing on Company Valuation, Technical Analysis, Idea Generation and Portfolio Analysis. In addition, students will take electives taught by Bloomberg representatives who specialize in areas such as Futures & Options, Volatility Risk, Advanced Fundamental Analysis, Advanced Technical Analysis, Currency, M & A Analysis, Convertible Bonds, Municipal Bonds, Yield, Money Markets, and Derivatives.

Students will attend five two-hour classes and take an exam at a Bloomberg terminal after each session. Bloomberg terminals will be networked to 12 workstations in Babson’s state-of-the-art Stephen D. Cutler Investment Management Center.”

Also look at Babson College Fund (BCF) it provides students with a real world educational experience. “The Babson College Fund is one of the most hands-on, real-life learning experiences on campus. The fund is an investment portfolio that manages a portion of the College's endowment that has been specifically designated for this purpose. The fund debuted in the 1996-1997 academic year, and it has become a reason why some students choose Babson.” But I don’t know how selective is it to participate in this program.
Also they have program that might be useful for marketing majors: “The Management Consulting Field Experience (MCFE) Program offers organizational consulting assistance in the ongoing effort to build and support the community. The MCFE Program, in conjunction with Babson College, works to strengthen and develop relationships with Boston area nonprofit organizations by offering undergraduate students the opportunity to work with local area organizations as consultants. Since 1976, undergraduate students have worked with companies recommending solutions to business challenges. The MCFE is a team-based, academic program in which students apply what they have learned in the classroom to an organization's business problems.”

I don’t know anything about international business. Many told me that it is one of the strongest programs at Babson (besides Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, Management)

Finally I will recommend you to look at 2006 undergraduate employment data, where you can see that only 7% of the graduates started their own business. Others work in different filed besides entrepreneurship.

Good luck.

Wow. VERY VERY well said
I have a friend at babson, and she tells me its so much work, but totally worth it. she enjoys the town, the atmosphere, everything

and dont forget, even though babson's known for entrepeneurship, its more about installing that motivation in their students than making them startups

when babson gives you FME, even if you fail, it shows that business is not all and rosy, it gives you the total package, oh and by the way babson has NO friday classes

go thursday pub nights!
