Only thing about board books is they are now a “thing” to give in lieu of cards at baby showers. Doesn’t mean it isn’t a great idea however. “Little Blue Truck” is a good one. But a baby shower with this theme gives an entire library.
Starbucks card with a “for those late nights!” tag is good too.
If you have any time at all and even most basic minimal skills with access to a machine, home made receiving blankets are nice. Super cheap and super quick to make (a quick roll hem (in lieu of a serge) on a basic rectangle does the trick) . So many adorable baby flannel prints these days. The commercial ones are REALLY small these days and next to useless (30 x 40) .
I was asked specifically for this as a gift not long ago. I made two. The much larger size of 36 x 45 (your choice here) makes quite a difference. Lots of directions on the internet but just go easy–some people line them or double the fabric etc. but not necessary (and depending on the climate you don’t necessarily want it overly warm anyway).
Or since this is your college professor–look up on a college site and see if they have “school specific” pacifiers or sippy cups etc.
Depending on your school there may be fleece yardage that you could make a small blanket out of (without any sewing at all!)
A small plush toy. When my daughter was born, she was given a couple of these by different people. She still treasures them. They are at college with her. She doesn’t know who gave them to her, but I think of those people every time I see her cuddlies. And they are inexpensive. I think as a student you don’t need to spend more than $10. You are also a kind person for being thoughtful.

What a good idea! I haven’t been to a baby shower in awhile so hadn’t heard of this but makes sense given how expensive and disposable cards are. Might as well buy a useful book instead. Smart.
Run in the right “YOUNG” crowd! (I aged out LONG ago but keep getting invited!)…
The idea is to give a board book rather than a card and write your message on the inside of it Creates a book library and memento at the same time. Nice!
But the curmudgeon in me says–sometimes the card will last longer than the book…(I still have cards).
I’m going out next Monday to get something, so I’ll decide over the weekend and let you guys know what I get. Not school spirit (he’s not really into the university). I have a favorite plush toy, so maybe something similar - or some cute clothing or a board book. Oh yeah… bibs… I forgot about those.
(Haven’t gone before because my car isn’t working.)
