I am currently a freshman and was wondering if it is possible, and if so, common for people to take five years in order to acheive a bachelor's degree at UC Irvine. I am currently double majoring in Political Science and International Studies because those are my passions, but at the same time I must meet the requirements for medical school. This is extremely difficult to do in four years and I have figured out a way to do it, but I think it would be easier if I spread the courses out over five years rather than four. If it is possible, would I have to file a petition or something to put off my graduation?? I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

It's quite common for undergraduate students who have more than one major to graduate in five or more years. I don't think you have to file a petition to extend your education beyond your fourth year, but I suggest you call your undergraduate academic adviser about it.

It's possible to graduate within 4 years, but you'll most likely have to take summer courses, have a good GPA to convince your academics advisers to let you go over the unit limit (default's 20) per quarter, plan your courses with care, and hope the courses you need are not full and available.

As a former UCI ElecE graduate, I can tell you that 5-years was 'not unusual' for many of the engineering majors (overcrowding, not having enough AP-units when entering school, not being able to take summer session.) So don't worry about 5-years.

I would seriously reconsider going over the 20-unit/quarter limit -- that's putting serious strain on your brain! And since you stated med-school is in your future, maintaining a top GPA must be a priority.

My RA was a double major and even had a minor!!! He is currently a 5th year and will be applying to med school. Good luck. He came in as a sophmore (AP credits)
