I am currently in an undergraduate program for mechanical engineering but would like to do work in the petroleum field after graduation. Since the school I am attending does not have a petroleum engineering field, is it possible to attend graduate school for petroleum engineering or would I need an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering to be eligible? Thanks

I’m sure it’s possible. Considering petroleum engineering is a relatively small field, you can expect that many people entering any kind of graduate program in it do not have petroleum engineering backgrounds.

You can do it. After being accepted at the graduate school, you would probably have to take 3 to 4 prerequisite courses at the graduate school before formally entering the program. I am doing the same. My undergraduate major was Chemistry. I am a graduate school for Petroleum Engineering. I have to complete 4 prerequisite courses before formally entering the program.

Wow! Thats really encouraging. I also just graduated B.S in chemistry (biology too). What school are you currently attending? What pre-reqs are they having you take? Do you have any advice for someone considering a career in PE?

Thanks!

I am in a similar boat (biology, chemistry), except every program and employer I have spoken to has said the bachelors is more important than a graduate degree. Curious, what programs are you guys in (looking at)?

Depending on what you want to do in petroleum engineering, you may not even need a degree in it. I know several people who were ME’s for undergrad and went on to work at petroleum companies.

I’m at USC. But, most other graduate programs accept non-Petroleum undergraduate majors as long as you take the prerequisite courses there.

The 4 prerequisites I have to take are the basic Petroleum Engineering courses such as Formation Evaluation, Transport Processes, Reservoir Engineering, and Geology. Drilling engineering is optional.

Hey I just read your post. I am also a double major in chemistry and Biology and would like to do petroleum engineering for my masters… What is the name of the school you are attending, and more importantly what are the name of the prerequisite classes that you have to take for petroleum?
Thanks

hey guys. i am in the same situation with a bechelor in chemistry and material science and will like to master in petroleum engineering. please give me updates. THANKS
