@abcd3f3, no it won’t let me enroll right now. I’m going to try during the next orientation and I’ll let you know. Well the first night, there is a ‘party’ called Club Jamba that goes on after Carpe Noctem and lasts until 1am. I didn’t go because I was really tired, I was on a flight just a few hours earlier. My roommate ended up meeting someone there who invited her and a few friends to a frat party. She ended up not going because he was ‘creepy’. I didn’t hear of many people actually attending frat parties or any other party for that matter. So just to answer your question, no there weren’t many, if any, parties going on. Especially not in the dorm rooms.

**If class enrollment opens from 9am, is your guide person available straight up from 9? As u can tell in pretty worried about getting my classes lol sorry **

If orientation is still like what it was two years ago, you and your entire orientation group will meet in your orientation counselor/new student advisor’s dorm room first thing in the morning. You will pick straws or draw cards to assign an order for signing up for classes. Students will enroll in classes using the counselor’s computers. I think they will each have two computers, so only two people sign up at any one time. You take turns in the pre-determined order to enroll in classes. Your counselor will be standing behind you, watching you and making sure you do exactly as they say (only enroll in three classes).

Pretty much what @phospholipase said :]

how do we choose which classes to take before we get to orientation? the class planner thing is so confusing!

Look through lists of GE’s and make a list of ones that look interesting.

Look at the requirements for your major. Make a list of the classes that have no pre-requisites.

Take the list of classes you have and try to pick out 3 or 4 that don’t have overlapping class times and don’t have overlapping finals (actually you’ll probably want to avoid having 2 finals on the same day your first quarter). You’ll also probably want to have some time in the middle of the day for lunch and maybe you’d prefer to avoid 8AM or 9AM classes. I would suggest taking at least two classes for your major each quarter, but if you’re not sure what to major in it’s probably better to start off with one.

Don’t pick classes that are closed and already have hundreds of people enrolled - they’re probably not going to reopen. If the class is closed but only has a handful of people enrolled, in many cases they will reopen (especially if it’s in a large lecture hall*).

*You can check the size of any classroom by search for RoomBuilding RoomNumber UCLA OID. [Example](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=12F&subareasel=COM+SCI&idxcrs=0180++++): Boelter 5249 [UCLA OID](<a href=“Boelter 5249 UCLA OID]UCLA - Google Search”>Boelter 5249 UCLA OID - Google Search)

I’ll vouch for avoiding the 8 am classes lol. Wasn’t fun my 1st quarter freshman year.

Sigh, I had no choice but to get 8am classes.

Thank you so much ThisCouldBeHeavn! Are there any courses that we are required to take? I’m in Poli Sci, but do I have to retake calc if I took it in high school, or certain writing seminars or something?

Unless you got a 5 on the AP calc AB test or a 4 on the AP calc BC test, you will have to take Math 1. However, if you get a 36 or high or the math placement test, you can take math 3A or math 31A.

If you passed the entree level writing requirement, you can take english composition 3, if you didn’t you might have to take eng comp A, 2, or 2I.

I was in a orientation group of poli sci major and none of them are taking a math course.

Degree Requirements are available here: [DEGREE REQUIREMENTS](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog11-12-21.htm#368767672_pgfId-998745)

You should get used to reading, understanding and finding things in the catalog.

I have a question about the math placement exam that I still can’t get a solid answer on… I got a 5 on Calc AB. Do I still have to take the diagnostic test?

Sent from my R800at using CC

@toulcanfan95 No you don’t. You can take math 3A or math 31A, whichever you choose.

So I don’t need to take the exam and the highest I can get into is Math 31A I can not place into Math 31B?

Sent from my R800at using CC

I think math 31B is only if you got a 4 or higher on the BC test. Not sure but I didn’t hear any first years taking 31B. And you can only get up to 31A by taking the placement exam.

If you test out of Math 1 or whatever, and you’re a humanities major, do you still have to take 31A?

How do I find out from the schedule when is the final exam? I am looking for math 3A and chemistry 14A. Thxs.

If you got a 5 on Calc AB or a 4 on Calc BC, you can sign up for Math 31B or 3B and don’t need to take the placement test. If you got a 5 on Calc BC you can sign up for Math 32A or 3C and don’t need to take the placement test. In all other cases you need to take the placement test if you want to take a math class. This information is on the math department website. If the Orientation counselor says otherwise, they are wrong.

There’s a Quantitative Reasoning University Requirement which most people get out of by some AP class or SAT score. The exact requirement is in the catalog (linked above). If high school didn’t get you out of it, there are non-math classes that fill the requirement. In most cases, you won’t have to take a math class to graduate (but you might want to take it for your own edification ). I was going to suggest not taking the test if you have no intention of taking a math class, but I suppose there’s no harm in having a score on file.

@CPUdesign, some courses don’t have the exact date and time of the final posted. There is however, a number code. When you attend orientation, you will get a handbook and inside there will be all the codes listed and the date it corresponds to.

I took calc BC in high school but did not take the AP exam, I want to do math 3A, i will be doing the placement test. If I do well, will I be placed in higher level course or can I still take math 3A.

I believe math 3A is the highest you can place into from the placement test. It’s a 60 question test and you have to get 36 correct to place into 3A. If not, you have to get 16 correct to place into math 1.
