Back from orientation session 101, any questions?

Question - Did anyone here get into UCLA’s Honors program? Or do you know anyone who did? How are Honors people affected?

I made a pretty close friend who was in the honors program. She signed up for regular courses just like the rest of us.

In the checklist online it says to bring all official records received by UCLA. What records did they ask you for?

Personally, I didn’t bring any and I was fine. People in my group brought their AP, SAT, and ACT test scores. Even their high school transcript and/or community college transcripts.

Do we have to pay extra for the honors program?

And what is essential to bring to orientation? (I’m a transfer.) It says transcripts and a copy of “all official records you have received from UCLA” but shouldn’t our orientation counselors already have our transcripts and related things? I don’t want to print things out I’m not going to need. Why would we need a copy of the orientation confirmation?

@choomtop, I’m not in the honors program so I don’t know the answer to your questions. However, someone here can probably help.

Yeah, your NSA will have any transcripts/test scores you sent in as long as it’s on you myucla page. I think they’re mainly asking for any grades/scores that hasn’t been sent in yet or hasn’t been updated yet. Also, I brought a copy of my orientation confirmation but I was never asked for it. So basically, I printed out for no reason. I guess they ask for you to bring it just in case.

Are honors courses only reserved for students in the Honors program?

No

There are a bunch of different types of honors courses. Most can be taken by anyone. I’m not 100% sure about exceptions, but I don’t think non-honors students can do honors contracts, and some Honors Collegium classes require instructor consent, in which case I’d expect that they favor honors students. Otherwise you should be good to go.

When do we get the opportunity to change majors? Who would we have to talk to?

What is the dorming situation during orientation?

@ellenelle, your NSA will have an academic meeting with you and you can ask him/her then.

@tolucafan95, you will be randomly assigned a roommate or two roommates. I was in Reiber Vista with only 1 roommate. Almost everyone was in Reiber Terrace with 2 roommates. You will either have a private bathroom or a shared bath with another room. This is not your roommate for the entire year so don’t freak out if you end up hating your roommate =P

Also, they provide you with a VERY thin blanket and a towel. I suggest you bring another blanket because it does get cold even though you have a thermostat in your room. I was freezing my first night.

From anecdotes that I’ve heard, your orientation roommates are probably assigned alphabetically by last names.

Yup, that’s true. Also, if you last name is towards the end of the alphabet, you will most likely be in Reiber Vista.

How big was your group?

8 students per group.

So how can we take four classes our first quarter?

Sent from my R800at using CC

Is it okay if we arrive an hour or two late? Like 9 or 10 AM on the first day. And when do we leave on the third day? I need to book tickets for session 106 xD

@tolucanfan95, you can only register for 3 classes at orientation but in September (I forget the exact date), you can register for a 4th when it’s open to everyone.

@exemplix, yes, it’s okay for you to arrive late. I suggest you don’t because the people who showed up late in my group were the awkward ones since everyone in the group already got to know each other. But that’s not the case for everyone, so I’m not saying it’s going to be like that for you as well. Just don’t be anti-social. Orientation ends at 5pm on the last day but my group was late because we took our time during the tour and I didn’t finish until 5:40ish. You can always leave early but if you do, you’re going to miss out on some cool stuff  5 out of the 8 people in my group left early.

Aww man what if it gets full! Darn it…
