they start 10 minutes after they say they start (this is known as Berkeley time)

you should schedule such that you can get from one class to the other within 10 minutes.

(i.e. Pimentel to VLSB takes about 8 minutes and hence is doable)
(i.e. Pimentel to Mulford would take really long time and hence is unadvisable)

personally i like to have an hour break b/w my classes. they come in handy when you have a midterm/quiz the next class or you want to get something to eat. and if they’re far away from each other AND you have a midterm in the next class, it’s super stressful.

MWF classes are 50 minutes, TuTh classes are 110 minutes. As anon5524485 said, every class runs on “Berkeley time” – 10 minutes after the stated start.

Be aware that this is somewhat flexible as well. Some professors will start immediately after that time window has passed (or earlier!) and some will take another 5 minutes just to show up. Also, some professors will end early and some will go over by 5 minutes! No real way to tell except by experience.

Definitely keep in mind the distances. You can do most short hops across campus in plenty of time, but going clear across campus is going to take some serious running or biking or luck. :P

Gaps are useful but not always possible. I use the annoying ones which don’t leave me enough time to go home but too much time to just go to the next class and sit to finish up assignments, catch up on reading, grab a bite to eat, etc. I’ve never had more than two classes back-to-back, either.

I tend to dislike breaks because sometimes it is hard to find a seat in big classes. Days with exams I hate feeling flustered and getting my test just as I sit down. Sometimes if something is due it needs to be turned in before the professor begins (and it usually happens exactly 10min after the hour). And it is easy to want to ditch when your classmates persuade you to go to lunch instead of class.

I have 3 classes back to back on MWF: German R5a (8-9), CS61AS (9-11) ,and Chinese 1y (11-12). The problem lies with CS61AS, because it is located in Soda Hall, where the other two classes are in Dwinelle. Is this schedule a bad idea? Does Berkeley time apply to the selfpaced CS61AS too, and the other two classes? thanks for the input

I’d think berkeley time would apply since it is the lab section you would be going to. That being said, you would definitely have to run to make it on time…I’m thinking it would take around 15 mins…planning on bringing a bike? Perhaps it would be ok to be ~5 mins late to section?
