I'm trying to figure out my fall schedule and was wondering if I wanted to take classes that were back to back like one from 10-11 then the next one from 11-12, would that be possible. Someone told me that you get a 10 minute passing on MWF classes and 15 minute passing on TTH classes. So will the professor always let us out on time to make it to our next classes? Will they release the students at like 10:50? Thanks in advance!

Back to back classes are the way to go. Classes end at 10 minutes before the listed end time that is on the hour. Classes that are scheduled to end on the half hour end fifteen minutes before.

I like to try to schedule back to back classes. If you are going to schedule back to back classes, make sure that you can do the walk in time. You can see which buildings each classes are in from the course schedule and look at a UT map and decide for yourself if it is a walk that is do-able. Having a 10 minute passing period to walk between class will be ok in most cases, just make sure to check the distance to verify it’s not too far. If you have a 15 minute passing period (a class that ends at 30) then you can do almost any walk and still make it.

Thanks! This was really helpful!

Most students prefer back to back classes so that they can finish their day earlier and to avoid awkward 1 hour gaps between classes that are too short to do anything significant with. However, I personally prefer these gaps. As a freshman, I decided to cling to my high school schedule and work from 9-4. I do most of my homework during the day, often right after class while the info is still fresh. The breaks between classes are also nice for some invaluable cramming right before a test or for swinging back to my room to pick up something I’ve forgotten for class. I also normally use the one hour breaks to knock out a chapter of reading before class. This is mainly useful in classes that have quizzes over those readings.

Yes, I love having back-to-back classes. I have found that if I have an hour break between classes, then it is not worth it for me to go back to my room/dorm and then leave just a little later.

Why do I hear mixed things about back to back classes?

I have a few friends at UT who say sometimes the professor won’t let you out 10 mins early because some days they are trying to finish their lecture, so then you end up late to your next one. This doesn’t happen everyday but it does happen often enough for you to notice.

I have other friends who say they are required to let you out early and they always do.

o.O? which one is it?

In the experience of the folks you talked to, probably both are correct. Most let you out, but some do not.

You should expect to be let out a few minutes late at least 1-2 times per semester per class. In these cases, it’s acceptable to leave early.

I’ve never had a chronically late professor, but they are out there.

1 hour breaks are pointless unless they are when you can grab lunch or a snack at that time.

Thanks guys. I already went to orientation and ended up with back to back classes because that was the only way my schedule would work out. But I think I’ll actually like it better this way.
