Back to school after military

I am getting out of the Marine corps next year and plan on starting to apply to schools for the Spring semester of the 2015-2016 school year. I have been taking classes online for about two years and will have around 50 credits when I get out of the Marines. Reviewing schools it seems if you have been out of high school for 5 years you do not need SAT/ACT. While the tests are not required, is it more competitive to take them and submit then anyhow?
Thanks!

You need to contact each place on your transfer-to list, and ask what they require. In many cases, the ACT/SAT is not even looked at for transfer students.

When you contact the admissions offices, be specific about your situation, and ask if there is an admissions officer who has primary responsibility for veterans. Some admissions offices do.

You don’t need to take the tests. Most schools will happy to accept you. Definitely look for the veteran’s admissions officer or liaison. Thanks for serving.

Each school is different in what it wants from transfer applicants.

If you will be a junior level transfer, high school type stuff like SAT/ACT scores or high school courses and grades are less likely to be required.

However, junior level transfers typically have 60 semester credits, including course work that prepares them to declare a major upon entry to a four year school. At 50 semester credits, you would be a sophomore level transfer, so there may be different requirements. Another option could be to top up your course work at a community college to get to 60 semester credits and complete the prerequisites for your major so that you can apply as a junior level transfer.
