Okay, so I am thinking of applying for a job at my old college and I was wondering when it comes to a background check what exactly can or do the HR department of the college look at in regards to your records when it comes to applying for a job? Is it like a regular background check? You know with a criminal background check, credit check, reference check and education check? Or is it different if you went to that college meaning they will be checking like your student health records-your medical records and mental health records and other records that are not normally available to them. I am just curious as I am little afraid of what they would look at when completing the background check for me.

They might look into any disciplinary actions you had while you attended. Unless the job requires a physical they would not look at your medical records. It is illegal to discriminate based on disability, and looking through such records can open them up to all kinds of legal issues.

Most jobs will only require proof of your ability to work in the US (birth certificate/social security card, passport, etc) and may check your references if they ask for it.

Some jobs may require background checks (working in schools, hospitals, jobs with security clearance, etc), but this will be something specific to the job and they’ll tell you that ahead of time. Usually it’s looking for a criminal record. They’re not going to be looking at your medical or mental health records without your permission, regardless of where you went to school or what the job is.
