Just wondering, do lectures or discussions ever require you to bring textbooks to class? is it specific to subjects (for instance, math classes don't need textbooks for class, but english and science do)? i kinduv need to know so i don't buy too big or small of a backpack... thanks in advance.

Like you said, it depends on the class. You usually dont have to take textbooks very often, but you may have to take it to some sections. Wait till your instructor tells you.

Get a medium sized backpack, one that can hold at least two binders, two notebooks, and two textbooks.

for math classes it's sometimes useful to bring the textbook into discussion (usually not lecture) because you might work on hw assignments there. i never had to carry the physics text book but i did see some people bring it to discussion as well. if your class focuses on a reader you usually have to bring that reader in a lot. generally you shouldn't need to carry more than 1/2 textbooks per day (but of course it depends on the person).

I just got a normal backpack.

I've only taken math, science, and engineering courses (and one music course) but I'd say generally speaking you'll never need a textbook in lecture or discussion. You may occassionally need a reader in discussion or something similar. My backpack almost never has a textbook in it. It usually has one or two spiral notebooks for notetaking and my laptop. Maybe a folder, too.

hey, thanks so much everybody. definitely helpful info here. i'm glad textbooks are rarely used in class. maybe my aching back will be able to heal from those dreaded high school yrs when every class required texts and none of them had a class set for class
