backpacks at berkeley..

Easy question... NAVY all the way! School colors! Go BEARS!

So, this one in deep navy..

or this one in deep navy...
http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=1&pid=T501

***edit: I also have a small laptop..which I plan on bringing to class everyday..

Definitely the Hellcat.

actually no, the superbreak looks great in navy. dunno why they used that gross green as a promo pic.

Will I need to haul around a lots of books everyday? Do most people bring their books to class?

Nope. Leave your textbooks at home - you never need them for lecture. You'll need to bring notebooks and lab manuals or readers for discussions, but those are much smaller than the gigantic 50-lb monstrosities.

On days when I had a lot of classes/sections, I would use a backpack (JanSport big student in blue). I also bought this "skin" thing from the Student Store for my laptop that was pretty protective (my laptop bag is SO heavy, I hate it)

On other days when I only had a section or two, I'd bring a tote bag...I have a cute one from H&M, another one from a New Pornographers concert I went to. You'll see a million girls with the same totes though, all from Urban Outfitters (b/c it's just down the street). I just ordered an Herve Chapelier bag from eBay, pretty excited about that b/c I heard they're quite sturdy. I also like Longchamp totes, but they're more expensive.

You will want a tote bag in addition to a backpack, if only because it's not that comfortable to have literally a folder and a notebook in your entire backpack, and plus totes are more convenient for quick access. You'll also find that sometimes you'll need to bring some papers to group meetings or whatever, and you dont want a backpack for that.

I started taking my notes on laptop second semester (too many history classes), but first semester I used notebooks (thin ones, about 100 sheets, for each class) You don't need books in lecture; sometimes they make you bring your book or reader to section, and you'll want a notebook in section as well. Still, sections rarely make you bring very heavy books (like in econ, my textbook was large but I never had to bring it anywhere)

*oh and tastyb; as far as readers being much smaller, I had a 600 page reader last semester for PS2. It was like 2.5 inches thick.

Wow..thanks sweetdreams! However, not sure what you mean by saying the Longchamp totes being more expensive when you mention the Herve Chapelier bags. After looking at both of them..it seems to me the Longchamps were cheaper. In any case..I'm probably going to order a customized Longchamp. They are super cute!

One again..thanks for the heads up.

Did a lot of people at your high school use Herves and Longchamps? (they did at mine...)

I dunno; on eBay, Herves are a bit cheaper (depends on the auction though). I won mine for only $28 (plus 8 shipping) On the official websites though, you're right, they do seem about the same price. I would have bought a Longchamp if i'd been able to find one for under 40...a customized one seems awesome! they are cute, and I think they'll be really handy for school

dude, i have a northface backpack [i've had it for like 3 years--i love that thing] and a $10 no-name messenger bag.

all these fancy totes are completely foreign to me.

=] to each her own, i suppose.

actually i LOVE north face backpacks! i really want one

I really like the north face backpacks too, but they don't have the deep navy color I want that Jansport does. btw..is Jansport too high schoolish?

"Did a lot of people at your high school use Herves and Longchamps?" Yes, many girls at my CC used totes, but wasn't farmiliar with those specific brands until you mentioned them in your last couple posts. But now that I am farmiliar..I do know many girls had them at school. After checking out the Longchamps though..I love them. I've decided on a medium size, long handled navy/pink bag embroidered with "tallkell" =) It's totally hot!

So..now it's all about the backpack: hellcat or superbreak? or find a northface color I can deal with?

shrugs my northface is periwinkle w/ black...

...but do all these colors, brands, and styles really matter all that much? i feel like cal is about academics and intellectualism more than style of bags =].

This thread is silly. Bring a backpack. Carrying stuff in your arms is an easy way to get things stolen/messed up/dropped.

hey, you can be an intellectual and still care about bags!

dude, don't let the nerds get you down about being stylish. get the cool bags.

thanks voiceofreason. i just bought a super cute bag from longchamp.

unstylish nerds suck!

Everyone has a backpack. It's convenient and practical.
