bad 1st BS, good 2nd BS + 32 MCATs....med school maybe? HELP!!!!

ok. so here's my problem. i suffered from my parents divorcing and the passing of two relatives while on my first BS. i had a 2.9. i know. terrible for med school. i had no idea what i wanted to do. i joined EMS for 2 years and developed a love for medicine. i am now on my last year of a BS in medical technology (obviously i wouldnt be able to get into med school no matter how high my MCAT scores are). i currently have a 3.7 with a diagnostic MCAT score of 32.

i love medicine so much i volunteered for a hospital and shadowed after a pathologist for a year and am still volunteering for my local EMS for over 2 years. i wondered if anyone can give me anything else that i can do to help me get in despite my turbulent past. any input would be greatly appreciated!!

There are many roads to med school. Not all of them are straight lines.

What is your overall GPA (including both your BS degrees and any other college coursework you have)? BCPM GPA (from all coursework)?

A lot is going to depend on those numbers.

well my bio degree was a 2.8-2.9. the BS i’m doing right now is completely from scratch. i transferred only the extra-curricular classes like history and english lit. i’m retaking the science courses completely including genetics, human phys + anatomy, organic chem, general chem + bio, etc. right now i have a 3.7. average is probably around a 3.5. i’m literally freaking out right now.

If I were you, I’d sit down and make a spreadsheet with all of your classes, units and grades and work out your overall and BCPM gpa. You need to count ALL college classes EVER taken at ANY time (even in HS). Include all grades even if you are retaking them.

Also it’s premature to get too excited by a single practice MCAT exam score. It’s pretty meaningless by itself. One isolated score is not predictive of your actual performance on the real exam. (It’s not even predictive of your next practice exam score.)

Don’t start counting your chickens until you have:

a) calculated your actual current GPA and BCMP GPA

b) have taken the actual MCAT and received your score

well when i said freaking out i meant nervous, not with anticipation. sorry for the confusion. i’m making a excel spreadsheet at the moment. thank you for all of your advice!

I think that you are good! Diagnostic MCAT of 32 is unbelievably high. I never even heard of the first MCAT try being so high. You have a good chance of getting very good MCAT after preparation. My D’s MCAT was 10 points higher than her Diagnostic MCAT, and she did much better on diagnostic MCAT than many others. Best wishes!
