Bad 1st Quarter... GOOD 2nd Quarter OK for College App? SENIOR YEAR PLS HELP!!

HI GUYS I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP?!

Ok, so up until Senior Year I had a 5.1 Weighted GPA(5.4 in Junior year) which I do not what it translates to in UW because my school doesn't do that, but the smartest kid in a Grade has 5.6( But she's higher than everyone by .1-.2 in GPA). Ok, that being said I took 3 AP's until this point and my school is Hard, ranked TOP 50 in the Nation and TOP 10 in NY. Ok, so 1st quarter I kind of messed up and I want to get into a BS/MD Program(Stony,Sienna, Union,RPI etc.) I am not applying to any Ivies. Most I am applying RD and I know they want 1st semester grades.

SAT Score: Math (700), Critical Reading (760). I am gonna retake the SAT for a higher math around 750..
SAT 2- Bio(770) and Math 2(730)
BUT I got these grades 1st quarter: I know I screwed up but it was extremely hard at first because all the teacher even AP Stats which is supposed to be a breeze is graded harder than a College Course. But almost everyone in our school gets 4's and 5's.

English- B+
Econ- A
AP Calc AB- C-
Science Research Honors- A-
AP Stats- C+( I missed a B- by 1 point!!)
AP Physics- B

Assuming, I got all A's second quarter which I can do because, now I know how these classes work. Would this help me because, I have never had a C before and I have gotten straight A's until this point. I would really appreciate your help folks. I know it will hurt my app but surely a strong 2nd quarter kinda makes up for a below-par 1st quarter??=)

Does your transcript even show quarter grades? My kids’ school only shows semester grades which are 40% first Q, 40% second Q and 20% final exams. Quarter grades are only given to colleges if you apply ED/EA and they specifically ask.

Check and see what your school does.

@OHmomof2

I think they would see both quarters…For the final report they only see your final grade though…

How will they see the first quarter if your final grade is based on a semester, unless you send it to them?

If anything, if the 1st quarter is bad and the 2nd much better, that shows the ability to regroup. Can only be good to have an upward trend IMHO, so don’t worry either way.

The key is if grades in your classes are awarded quarterly; I’m sure you know. But if the two C’s are awarded quarterly, it may not hurt you much, but that is sure hard to know. It is not as good as all A’s. If you are applying to very selective schools, successful candidates get essentially all A’s - in the rigourous classes.

Thanks guys! It helps a lot for your info. I think I will survive as in that80’s song…
