Bad Act scores help

I just took the test the first time and got an 18. The thing is my scores suprised me because I was expecting higher scores in English and Math than science and reading… I finished both sections of the english and math way before time was called and got an 18 in english and 16 in math… While the reading and english i scored 19s on both and i barely went past halfway before i started rushing in my answers…

I am taking it again in April and maybe the next one during the summer. My goal is a 23 for the college i want to go to…
I’m currently taking the online prep that act.org let me use!

Any tips in the english and math that would give me higher chances of getting the question right? I swear i thought i scored the highest in English. AS for my math, while taking it, i forgot how to do so much of the type of problems.

I would look in both the ACT Prep subforum and the SAT Prep subforum. In the SAT prep look for the Xiggi method and SilverTurtle method.

Hey. My first ACT practice test score was a 20, so it’s not entirely impossible to improve your score. I suggest you buy a test preparation book for the ACT if you’re going to be really motivated. Read that every day. The book will cover all the topics you will need to know for the test. Do as many practice problems you can every day. Additionally, try the SAT. That test might be right for you, you never know.

My advice is to take whole practice sections instead of just doing individual practice questions. This will help you get used to the time limits, which can sometimes be the hardest part.

Good luck!

I would definitely buy a study book–my score never went significantly up until I bought one. The most accurate to the real thing is the Real ACT Prep Book, which is the Red one that’s the official ACT one (you can get it for like $5 at Abebooks .com). And I echo what eyrar99 said–definitely do entire sections with a time limit, since the time limit is usually what trips people up. Good luck!

I’ve got massive advice for you! Firstly, I would invest in both Erica Meltzer’s ACT English book- it’s an immense comprehensive review of all grammar on the test (retails on amazon for around $22), and secondly I would get the barron’s book for math. You will improve naturally on the science through taking practice tests as well as on the reading by going through the rhetorical components of the english section in Erica’s book. Overall, good luck man! I personally suck bad at standardized testing but using the previously mentioned resources I improved from a 1580 SAT to getting around a 28 on the ACT so it’s possible best of luck!
