I think I got a pretty bad financial aid package from this school. They gave me an $8000 scholarship (I guess just for my grades) and then 2 loans and work study. I mean, come on. I might get another $1000 if I get into honors, but frankly the application looks like a pain. My sister is in college too. Anybody do better?

Actually, that is pretty good. My daughter got only $6,000 last year. I think that top merit aid is $10,000.

You have to take their tuition into account. Yes, the merit money may be less than that of other schools, but their tuition is lower than most private schools too. When you consider that RIT charges about 23K in tuition vs. 37K for CMU, 33-37K for ivys and at leat 30K for most other good private schools, their 8K offer doesn't seem so bad.

I got about 10k in grants and 2 loans too. Its not that bad...

We haven't received our aid package yet.

Okay, we got our aid package yesterday. It wasn't too terrible - about 10K in merit and need-based scholarships and work/study and the rest is loans. Better than two of the financial aid packages we've received out of the 4 colleges D has been accepted to.

I know my friend got accepted early decision and his mother wrote the financial aid office, expressing her regret that he didn't get more money. They actually gave him 2k more/year. I thought that seemed a bit strange, but she talked about how they wanted to teach him responsibility by making him pay for part of his education, and with more scholarship money, he will have to pay less...or something like that. I thought it was a bit sketchy, but you can try it.
