So I got a 3 on ap comp sci which is what I plan to major in. How badly will this affect my chances of getting into schools like uc berkeley?

Reporting AP scores is optional, so it might not affect admissions chances at all.

I agree with sherpa, except substitute “might not” with “will not.”

As far as admissions, it probably won’t have much impact at all. However, you might want to think about how to do better in the subject once you hit campus, as it is a very competitive major. What can you do to shore up your capabilities before you hit campus so that you are not at a disadvantage?

Computer Science isn’t a major AP. I would be much more worried with a poor score on Lang and Comp.

Agreed with all of above

I thought it was fairly obvious OP meant “major” as in “college focus of degree” rather than “core” :p

But as everyone said, it shouldn’t hurt you much if at all.

If you plan on majoring in L&S Computer Science at Berkeley, then this won’t matter at all, as you would be applying to the college as a whole and not a specific major.
Applying for the EECS major is a bit harder, but as Berkeley ascribes such a low value to AP Computer Science A (you don’t get any college credit for it at all), it probably doesn’t factor nearly as much as your math ability as far as their evaluation of whether you can succeed in that major. For all they know, your AP Computer Science teacher was abysmal and inadequately prepared you to score any better than a 3 on that test. They won’t be worried about you not being “ready” for the Computer Science curriculum because their course offerings/prerequisites assume that you are starting with very little actual computer science experience. The one drawback that a 3 on AP Compsci could bring would be undermining claims that you have invested much into learning computer science in your highschool years as an extracurricular interest.
