I took AP chem just for the heck of it and got a 1 haha. Our school doesnt even offer the class but i thought i'd take it. Of course i found out it was one of, if not the, hardest ap tests there is. I am planning on being a chemsitry major at uw and ill be a freshman this fall. Do you think that theyll see it or look at it when i apply for the major? Will it look bad? Is there anyway to take it off my transcript?

Unless your school puts it on your transcript (which most don’t), you have to self report it. Just don’t put it down.

Specific AP scores can be withheld from your AP summary report, but you have to pay and order for them to be removed. After a certain date, ALL of your AP scores are automatically sent to the school that you listed when you originally filled out your answer sheet, so it may be too late.

It is very likely that the major will look at your score when you apply. Since chemistry is a competitive major at UW and freshmen who get into the program through direct freshman admission are required to have a 5 on the AP chemistry exam, you will most likely have to apply though regular admission.

Although honestly, considering this old topic of yours:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/1131069-no-chem-144-advanced-general-chem-autumn-2011-a.html

I would probably take some time to consider other possible majors. If you really did everything you said you did (self-studied from Zumdahl and knew everything in the book), you should not have gotten a 1. A 1 on the AP exam of what you plan on majoring in isn’t a good sign, especially when the national average was a 2.76. The last thing you want to have happen during your first quarter is end up destroying your GPA because you signed up for something that was too much for you to handle.

k well did you not read the post above??? We dont have the ap class so i just took it knowing i wouldnt do too well. I was expecting either a 1 or 2 on it, but i just wanted to take it for the experience. I still got A’s all 4 semesters at school taking chemistry, and “advanced chemistry” whatever that means, i guess just more rigor than normal but not quite AP. Still love it to death but there were a few topics that we didnt cover and i just completely bombed the FRQ’s cause i really had no idea cause it was stuff we didnt even touch on in class. So i mean i’ve taken those two years and done really well and still love it and still want to pursue it. It’s too late to withhold(a word?) the score cause they’ve already been sent to and reported at the uw and i can see them online, although they are not on my uw transcript, so does that mean that the chemistry major whatever they’re called wont see it, or can they still see it? Dont talk me down like i can’t handle it. if you read that whole last thread that you put out on here you’d see that i know what i can handle, and i know what i want. I feel like i’d do just fine in the chem classes, its just a matter of getting into the major. I dont plan on direct admit. So as long as i do good on my chem/math/other science/math classes in college then thats what they’d primarly look at so i’d get accepted into the major?

I’m just giving you a reality check in case you need one; don’t take any offense to it, I don’t mean it to be. The honors and advanced chemistry classes at Bothell (I used to go there) did not specifically cover the AP test, but covered enough material that it was very helpful for the CHEM 142 series. I feel that with taking those classes and self-studying as you put it (and maybe you weren’t being entirely accurate by saying you knew how to do everything in the book), it seemed that you were dedicated and naturally talented enough in chemistry to score higher than a 1. It’s just not a good SIGN, however, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t major in chemistry.

As long as you do good in your pre-req classes, I’m sure the admissions office wouldn’t care about your AP score from high school. The hard part is actually doing well.

ha i love ms. Hill. And i know that it is very helpful from the 142 series. And the 142 series is indeed different from the AP test… But no really i did self study alot and went through the whole PR chem book and took the practice tests and stuff and i dont know maybe it was an off year or something but the book really didnt help too much and all the basic stuff on the test was pretty easy and i thought that i’d get a 2 just from the multiple choice. It was just the frq’s. I know thats where i did terrible, but really i know what i love, as i’ve said, I’m just not sure how they handle ap scores. And it would make since they throw it out after i complete 142,152,162 because thats what the ap test covers so its like i know it anyway so that score wouldnt matter.
