Bad aspects of Duke

With Cornell and Yale, you can at least get to NYC within 4 or so hours, while with Duke you can get to...Charlotte?, which is a nice city but no NYC.

4 hours? Hey if you're willing to go that far, y'all can come up here (DC) in the same time. :D It's no NYC either but there's more stuff here than monuments and museums.

I always thought DC and Atlanta were 6 hours at least

edit: looks like DC is 4

Trust me, I'd never survive a six-hour car ride. :)

I actually disagree that there isn't much in Durham for college students. Having been to Franklin St. a number of times and coming from Seattle (therefor familiar with the U District), I think Durham is actually pretty competitive. 9th isn't the only place to hang out, there's also Brightleaf Square which as a bunch of good restaurants, a bunch of bars, and some pretty cool shops. There are a number of good restaurants near campus with a variety of types of food as well. Within reasonable driving distance there's the mall (pretty nice), a couple of museums, Chapel Hill, and even Raleigh isn't too far.

Yeah, the Princeton Review said something about "high schooli-ish superficiality and a jock mentality."

Is there much basis in that?

ROFL. Amen to that- I can't wait to get out of Charlotte. Dukegirl makes Durham sound really nice. :)

Haha, I just get irritated when people automatically dismiss Durham. I've had a pretty good time here, enough so to spend my last summer of college in Durham. And that summer has been pretty ridiculous as well. Really, I think it comes down to cool people and cool places to hang out, and I think we have plenty of both. It may take some time to get used to Durham, but once you make an effort to get off campus and explore, I'm pretty sure you'll find plenty of cool restaurants and bars and little stores.

Durham is not that great of a city - its not that safe either. Also, something that I totally didn't expect my first few days as a Dukie is the prevalence and abundance of drugs on campus

^agreed about Durham, though it does have a few cool streets and some stores are incoming

about the drugs, they are very prevalent and the greek scene is pretty big since other cultural/social activities haven't started up yet, but all the upperclassmen are really nice...more later

what do you guys mean by drugs? Just pot? Or hardcore stuff like acid?

hahaha
well mostly just alcohol
but a few kids smoke pot.

Whoa...I haven't run into anyone that does drugs. A girl had to be taken to the hospital because she had 10 shots of vodka, though.

^ That happens many times every year in the first couple of weeks...

bad aspects...durham pd...

i would suggest to future duke students not to go to the frats off east their night after move-in...300ish underage drinking citations b/t two parties that night...great fun having 6 cop cars surround a party on your first night, not to break it up, but to surround the place and take everyone out one by one to pass a breathalizer...i'm honestly not sure if the durham courthouse has enough parking spaces for the arrival of about 1/20th of duke's student body on oct 11th...

yeah mike, i'll be there...sigh

Thought, I haven't seen you around. I'll be lookin out for you. I escaped two parties before the cops came. Let's just say I would not have passed the breathilizer with flying colors. :)

You can still drink after "the Real Deal?" It was so convincing, lol.

I haven't seen any alcohol, but then again, I've pretty much remained on East.

Haha I was at the party that got busted by the cops. How unnerving. The Sigma Nu one, luckily I didnt get a citation :)

I had three friends at the Sigma Nu party when it was busted... they waited for a while before trying to leave and amazingly blew zeros and were let off. The kids across the hall from me weren't as lucky, though.

there are so many people in my dorm who got busted...I was on my way to Sigma Nu and turned around because I was wearing soffee shorts and a tank top...good night to stay in.
