Does anyone know how a student can qualify for an education loan when the parents are not qualified to be co-signers?

You don’t need them for Fed loans (Staffords) and if they apply for a Plus loan and get turned down, you qualify for more. At least that’s the way it was a few years ago. If you are talking about a private loan and you are a high school student you are probably out of luck unless another co-signor steps up.

Still is that way now. A freshman is eligible for $5500 in Stafford loans which do not require a cosigner. If the parents apply for a PLUS and are turned down then the student is eligible for an additional $4000.
