Alright…I have pretty bad eyes…20/500…if I was able to obtain a waiver, and perform well academically, physically, and militarily, do you think USAFA would hook me up with the PRK… Or is it absolutely impossible.
Just Wonderin
Thanks

I'm not sure...I think as long as your eyes are correctable to 20/20, then yes. I'm not sure if 20/500 fits that profile or not, though I'm sure someone else can give you more insight.

alright cause I want sure....theres a girl I know that got a waiver and she is nearsighted, just like me and she was 20/875. I wasn't sure wether to believe her so, why not come here and ask some people who do know the answers

Having 20/500 vision is not going to stop you from getting into the Academy. It just might disqualify you for PRK or a pilot slot but it won't if your vision is within -1 and -3. Or something like that, I don't remember exactly but don't worry, 20/500 is no biggie for getting in.

Last I heard at orientation the numbers were from -3.25 and -8 that are qualified for PRK.

you're probably right and I'm probably making stuff up :)

lol just relaying what I got. I am a -1 so I can't get PRK...

i've talked to hornet bout this, he usually has pretty good info :)

That he does... What did he say?

ugh, since HNeedle decided to bring my name into this....

If you're -1, then you are PQ assuming everything else is in range. PQ is -1 to +3, astigmatism up to .75, and vision no worse than 20/40 (or maybe 20/50?). For example, I am 20/40, L = -.25 R = -.5, astig = 1.25. Therefore I am NQ not PQ. I am hoping that they can either use PRK to fix my astigmatism OR, as they did this year when the 2 digs got their air force specialty codes (ie pilot, missile, satellite, navigator, personnel, SF, etc.). I know of someone who is NOT PQ who got pilot slot. Therefore, standards each year may be different or more lax.

On the subject of applying for PRK. My impression is that you can get it to become PQ if your academic/military/physical are acceptable and you don't have an uncorrectable problem. Like if you are farsighted for example. Unless you plan on being a **** bag while you are here, chances are you will be able to get the pilot slot.

sorrry hornet, but you DO have excellent info :)

I'd agree. As for PRK making you PK, there is a cadet at the zoo now who I know of that got PRK and is now PQ so the surgery does allow to get a slot I'd assume, if everything else is ok as hornet said.

all i know is that I want to fly....my dad is a pilot, so obviously he has great eyes, but I ended up getting my moms eyes.....boy did i get the short end of the stick

hornet is a walking internet: full of so much info :)

The internet is also full of all kinds of bad things. What are you trying to say, eagle? hehe. Reminds me of a story. Don't let hornet near your screensaver. :)

that it is. so moral is be careful, cause good things can become very harmful (aka hornet training 4-digs... BEWARE!)

:) O they have no idea what is waiting for them....muahaha.

hahaha thats great :)
