Bad Financial Aid

I applied to all my colleges with the condition that I am a ward of the state/ foster child, long story short I just got my BU fin Aid package and only got $11,000/year with loans! How is this even possible I have am EFC of 00000. I was not offered any BU Grants, with 3.44 GPA and 2070 SAT. It is possible that they will reconsider giving me a grant if not many people accept their enrollment by May 1?

Unfortunately I wouldn’t count on it. They have a massive amount of kids on the waitlisted who can pay the hefty tuition one way or another. You can write a request to them explaining your circumstances, but since your FAFSA already shows 00000 there might not be anything you can do to raise the money.

Okay thanks, I’ll try to appeal for reconsideration, but I doubt I can make it before the enrollment deposit deadline.

Call and write them. You may be able to request an extension of your decision beyond the May 1st deadline. Some schools will do that knowing you are in the appeal process. The admission office may be the place to request the decision extension particularly if you have gotten acquainted with your admissions counselor.
The downside is you may need to get the same consideration from your backup school or post a deposit.
Good luck and I wish you well.

Do appeal. You have not left much time, but you should talk to them, and ask them to please reconsider, and ask admissions for an extension for your enrollment deposit and commitment until you get the results.

In the meantime, you should send your deposit and commitment to a college you can afford. If BU comes back with enough money to make it a go, then you can let that school know you are not coming just as you would if a waitlisted school accepted you after May1. You would lose that deposit, You need to have that other alternative well in place because BU does not guarantee to meet need, and they don’t. Look at their numbers. So, this is not the case of as school, where if you can get them to recognize your need, they will meet it, as would be the case with schools that do guarantee to meet need. BU can acknowledge your need, but say they simply choose not to meet it or they are out of funds and cannot meet it.

I just looked up what percent of freshman got need fully met at BU, and it’s less than half. So, you are in good company there. And that’s of the kids who ended up going there anyways.

Thanks, just submitted my appeal. In case this does not work I have to pay $47,445 by myself every year is that a feasible amount to take out in loans? Or is that considered overkill, I really want to go to BU

First of all I would definitely appeal. Also the amount of financial aid you received makes absolutely NO sense! Did you turn in FAFSA or CSS late or anything like that? If you can, try calling them, emailing them, or going in personally (with a parent or your foster parent) to talk to them. They’ll be loads nicer to you to you if you bring in an adult.
