well...i want to transfer to nyu stern, but... it looks like my first term grades look fairly sub-par at the moment. likely around a 3.4 or so, will that affect me too much, even if i had a 4.0 or so 2nd semester?

i know this is CC, but don't beat yourself up. a 3.4 isn't terrible at all.

that said, are you applying for fall '07? i'm not sure that 4.0, if you got it, would be available early enough for the adcom to even be able to consider it.

where are you right now?

A 3.4 is pretty good, especially if you can pull that 4.0 second semester.

I had a 3.64 at Tulane and a 4.0 at midterms second semester and got into Penn, Brown, Swarthmore, UPS, and Vassar as a transfer. Deffered at WashU

GPA is all relative to the school that youre currently attending

and major too

Engineering vs. History GPA's mean different things

Def. A 3.4 at MIT is an entirely different thing than whatever state, or even a lot of ivies or other schools with grade inflation (I mean no dis to either).

johnnzen:
and major too

Engineering vs. History GPA's mean different things

what the heck does that mean?? do you expect engineering majors to have higher GPAs than history majors? just because we're in engineering does not mean we're straight A kids

Don't immediately assume the negative; engineering is tough, so a 3.4 GPA is impressive. If you were the same major as Claysoul, and if you had anything below a 4.0, you would be pretty darn stupid.

haha oh alright, i was just checking...i thought you ment that engineers should always have 4.0s...a 4.0 in engineering is damned near hard, not even a joke...im hopin to transfer from VT to UVA engineering with a 3.4, even though the average engineering GPA at both are 3.2 overall, 3.1 first-years

Woops sorry! I shouldn't have posted that without explanation.

is a 3.5 a respectable engineering GPA? i'm trying to transfer to UVA from VT, and i don't think i'll get higher than a 3.5 =/

Nspeds, don't be malicious. You just make yourself look bad. You don't even know what my major is.

he wasnt trying to be malicious, he was just pointing out that your "needed" GPA would be based on your major, and was pointing out that more complex and difficult degrees could make up for a lower GPA...no one expects history/LA majors to get 4.0s, and no one expects all engineers to get 3.4s or lower

That's malicious, especially concerning the history Nspeds and I have had (consisting of him repeatedly antagonizing me for no apparent reason)

Yeah, geez Claysoul.

Someone is bitter.

Oh come on, need I post the personal messages you've sent me about me being your "intellectual inferior?" You're ridiculous.

me being your "intellectual inferior"

She said it, not me!

(I love taking things out of context)

Need I post private messages of your admitting to that?

Admitting to me being your intellectual inferior? -- I don't believe that has ever happened, but that's hardly the point.

Really? I have private messages to the contrary.

No, you don't.

If you think me telling you to get a life is somehow saying that I am your intellectual inferior, you're wrong.

That said, get a life.
