Bad freshman and sophomore year, great junior year... will barnard look past this?

freshmen year, i got a 3.56 uw, sophomore year, i got a 3.42 uw and junior year (hypothetically speaking, i know i can do it) i will get a 4.0 uw.

cumulatively, i will have a 3.66 gpa which is low for barnard but i don’t think it’s hopeless yet. will the significant upward trend help?

also, SAT I is 2200, ACT is 35, and i have decent extracurriculars. i am a sophomore

Hey, purplepoppy07! We seem to have similar problems, I’m a sophomore as well.
Sorry, this is not a response, but I’m interested to hear the answers as well.

late bloomers unite!

but seriously, barnard was the only reason that i pulled my act together and got the high sat and act score. i really wish that i could convey that to them somehow, that even though i’m two years late, i’m ready for barnard! what’s your story?

anyone else have advice?

Yeah, same here! I was brilliantly lazy freshman year, and thought everyone was slacking just like I was- they weren’t. But a couple of months ago, I discovered Barnard, and legitimately fell in love with it! I just really hope my dumb behavior last year wasn’t enough to guarantee rejection, because I would be so heartbroken. I also wish I knew what they were looking for, so I could mold myself into the perfect applicant.

purplepoppy07- Hi. You’ve made three threads in this forum all basically saying the same thing. Just so you know, the Barnard forum is small enough that I think most people will see all three. : P Anyway, nobody around here can mind-read those enigmatic admissions committees, so I say just do as well as you can and write awesome essays. Also, if you don’t apply ED, your senior grades count too. So you have two more years to get your GPA up and improve your ECs.

@shay33 Yeah I just realized that… I’m just so worried and desperate at this point! Plus I’m kind of neurotic and weird. Sorry if I bothered anyone.

Y’all are fine. An upward trend is always nice, unless you’re a huge public university (which Barnard is not).

@purplepoppy07-- While I do not share your dilemma I hope to convey some words of encouragement: While Barnard does hold a standard as to what kinds of students they accept, I don’t think your GPA will stand in the way of your accpetance. My AP Chem teacher told me that her friend was accepted to Barnard with a low SAT score. The point is, is that the admissions board looks at you as a whole. If everything about you is up to Barnard standards, then I think you still have a pretty good shot at getting in. As long as you don’t let yourself get bogged down by your GPA, and if you continue to improve your GPA throughout the rest of your highschool career, I don’t think you have anything to worry about! Good luck, I know you will do great :)

Thanks Rachel13! That was very encouraging.

And congrats on getting in!
