Bad Freshman Year?

Race: Asian
Rank: Top 25%
Legacy: No
Parents: Both had college diplomas

To be honest, I'm a really great student. However my freshman year was bumpy. I got mostly Cs and some Bs.

First semester of soph year - 2 Bs, rest are As
Second Semester of soph year - All As
Junior Year - All As

As far as test scores, I got a 34 on the ACT and a 2360 on the SAT. I do pretty well on standardized tests, too. I was able to get four recommendation letters from teachers from junior year.

And for extracurriculars, i'm pretty satisfied. I'm in about 14 clubs, but don't take me for a person of breadth. I'm president/founder of two clubs, have more than three other officer positions, and am a national/state/international competitor in Math, Business, Speech and Debate, Geography, and have placed very high. Trust me on this one, I just don't feel secure specifying everything.

So to sum it up

Grades: Good, except for freshman year
Test scores: Good
ECs: Good
Essays: Good, i hope?
Recs: Yes

EDIT: I took all Pre-AP/AP classes. I took 6 AP classes my junior year and still got high As, which is a difficult feat as my school is generally a bit tough.

EDIT 2: I have about 300-400 hours of community service, coming from camps, elementary school activity organizing, etc.

EDIT 3: I got 5s on all the AP exams.. luckily. As for SAT subject tests, it ranged from 780-800.

To colleges care about freshman year? Can I give a reason why I did bad? Can you exclude your freshman year from your transcript?

And the big question is:
Do I have a chance for a good college after doing bad freshman year?

Chance me for UT Austin, MIT, UC Berkeley, UT Dallas, etc.

Thanks a lot.

Kevin

To me you seem like a ■■■■■. Just my opinion.

depends on the school some don’t even count freshman grade like U of Mich, I would call the schools that you are applying to to see their policy on the matter

I had similar circumstances as yours. 2.8 Freshman GPA and a 4.6 Junior GPA.

Stanford accepted me. It’s understandable and won’t plague you.

MIT - Reach
UC Berkeley - in

Thank you all! This really was a serious question and am glad that there are people who were accepted.

Thank you so much!!

In austin and dallas. About fifty fifty at berkeley. Mit about 20%. Best of luck!!

Any others?

you should add in some ivies. You belong at a great school, but you never know, so add in some that are around/ a little below UCB and MIT. I strongly suggest lower ivies and schools like carnegie mellon, vbanderbilt, johns hopkins, and georgetown. Good luck.

I agree with the above poster.
