Bad Freshmen Year Grades?

So basically, I started my Freshmen year off pretty strongly, with straight A's. However, towards the middle of first semester, some emotional issues I'd previously dealt with in life came up and hit me out of nowhere again. (I had a couple traumatic experiences as a kid..) Due to this, I spent a good majority of the year up until the middle of fourth quarter totally depressed, and my grades suffered severely. My GPA for Freshmen year will likely be no higher than a 2.5 or so. Pretty pathetic xD

Even if it's a little early to be worrying about the whole college thing, I'm curious as to how much it would affect me in the future if I got my grades for the next three years back up to the usual A's and decided to apply to selective colleges. (one of my dream schools is MIT, but I realize that even with perfect grades, it's difficult to get into, so I keep that in mind and don't obsess over it as some do..) s: When the school's guidance called me up to discuss how much my grades had fallen, they offered to write up a letter to any colleges I apply to in the future explaining the drop in my grades. I'm hoping my extracurriculars will help a little to make up for the poor grades as well. xD

Some of them include teaching myself to code and starting a fairly successful website when I was 11, working for a website with 10,000 members as the sole programmer when I was 14, now working for a website with about 500,000 members as one of three programmers there, and helping out at my parents' candy store/making chocolates for charities and such. I'm also hoping to start on a new project soon that will convert handwritten papers into typed text, and am designing a few websites for friends at the moment. I have a sort of up in the air idea about starting a SMALL free summer camp to teach a few middle school aged kids programming, but I haven't really thought all that much into it yet. (It's likely that it will have to happen next summer, if it does. :P)

So pretty much, I'm just wondering how bad of an affect this year's grades are going to have on college choices/my future s:

I think they won’t matter that much with a letter from your counselor and an explanation from you. In fact, some schools – I think Princeton – don’t look at freshman grades. And most look for an upward trajectory. What is really important is that you are dealing with those difficult issues. There are tons of great colleges with a great fit - you will surely get into one of them.
