Bad GPA, but Native american?

So, Sophomore year I messed up my GPA. I got a 3.2 (No d's or f's)This was due to a family crisis that I had trouble dealing with. I know there's no excuse so now I am just trying to deal with the consequences of my actions. I anticipate a 4.0 next year (my junior year) With Many AP classes. I know your thinking how could you do well junior year when you totally failed at 10th grade with No ap's? I'm pretty smart. I just made a big mistake. My SAT currently is 2290 but I have a year to bring it up and my act is 35 which I think I can bring up as well. As for URM besides being the first in my family to graduate high school I am a Native american (arapaho). I'm registered and my family is also very involved in the native american community. I have much work experience, good recs, and other things like that. I guess what I'm asking is have I ruined my chances? I understand kids get straight A's and take AP's their entire lives and still get rejected... I just figured there is no harm in asking. Thanks!

bear down and prove you can do the work. Your test scores are very promising. Make yourself “irresistible” and knock out 4.0s or as close as possible to them as you can. Good luck.

When I first read “this was due to a family crisis that I had trouble dealing with,” I almost exited the screen; excuses will get you no where. Then I read “I am just trying to deal with the consequences of my actions.” I was actually incredibly impressed. Good for you! I would advise you not to go down the road of “my mom is a crack addict/prostitute/cripple etc.” when writing an essay because it comes off as tiresome justification for actions you pursued.

Anyway, I would focus entirely on bringing up your GPA. Context is key, so make sure you know what the GPA would be to get into the top 10% and make that GPA your ideal. You know you could calculate what your future GPA would be if you know how your classes will be weighted…

Being a Native American is a golden ticket. I would also consider applying to Dartmouth.Google “Dartmouth+Native Americans.”

If you continue to improve, then I think you really do have a shot at it. As a Native American with strong Standardized test scores, I think improving your grades would do a lot to seal the deal.

Native American is a huge, huge hook. Your test scores are fine. Bring your grades up significantly this year and I think you will have an excellent chance at admission. Good luck.

Native American is an excellent hook for Dartmouth. Excellent chances.

I can’t imagine there’s a big market for that.
