Bad GPA but URM??

So, This is my first post here! Yay! So, Sophomore year I messed up my GPA. I got a 3.2 (No d's or f's)This was due to a family crisis that I had trouble dealing with. I know there's no excuse so now I am just trying to deal with the consequences of my actions. I anticipate a 4.0 next year (my junior year) With Many AP classes. I know your thinking how could you do well junior year when you totally failed at 10th grade with No ap's? I'm pretty smart. I just made a big mistake. My SAT currently is 2290 but I have a year to bring it up and my act is 35 which I think I can bring up as well. As for URM besides being the first in my family to graduate high school I am a Native american (arapaho). I have much work experience, good recs, and other things like that. I guess what I'm asking is have I ruined my chances? I appreciate your help and I look forward to being a part of this community.

If you truly are Native American and have a 35 on the ACT then you’re going to be golden assuming you do get a 4.0 next year (and first semester senior year).

Registered and everything! Thanks So much, That gives me the little hope I needed!

Yea just focus on your GPA and extracurriculars. Don’t bother doing anymore testing other than SAT subject tests.

Thanks, I’m going to work really hard next year.

My apolagies for turning this into a chance thread… But what other schools would I have even the slightest chance at? Like Harvard, Northwestern and Vanderbilt?

You have a nearly equal chance at Vandy, but I have no idea about your Harvard chances. You should post on their thread.

One thing to consider is to right your application essay about the growth that you experienced after going through that rough time in 10th grade. This would make the admissions staff aware of your situation and would explain your GPA that year without sounding like you are making excuses.

As for the schools that you are interested in, they should be in reach. However, countless students apply to these schools with great records and everything they need, but they don’t all get in. I would suggest deciding which school is your top choice and applying ED. That will give you the extra push because you have what it takes. You just need a little luck.
