Bad GPA First Semester...What can I do to improve?

Hello! I am a freshman at a t30 university and majoring in neuroscience/pre-med. I just received my first semester’s gpa and it was a 3.1. I didn’t do as well as I hoped to because to be honest I wasn’t ready for how much work I would need to put in so I slacked off a lot. I know if I do better next semester it won’t be the end of the world for me for med school but I was wondering if I can get some advice for how I can improve for the future and if a 3.1 first semester is not going to destroy me. Thank you!

hey, i’m a freshman as well and i have a 3.1 GPA as well for first semester. the thing you have to realize is that GPA is not permanent. i have heard of some people starting off with a 4.0 and graduating with a 3.0 and others with 3.0 ending up with 3.8. So if anything first time failing makes you want to put your 100% effort into what you are learning. just kick butt next semester. the past is the past. we can still graduate with a 3.8 GPA which is good enough for medical school GPA is just one part.

Most students have a 3.1 in their past. Just listen to yourself. If orgo and cell bio etc end up not being your strength or interests, keep an open mind. Get a 3.9in the spring and you’ll have a great 3.5 for freshman year. Get a 3.5 and a 3.3 won’t be bad either.

If your not planning on med school, these are fantastic anyway.
