Bad GPA, Good SATs...do I have a chance?

I'm kind of nervous because my mom keeps telling me I don't have a chance because I'm not in the top 10%, but I don't want to have to go to A&M. Here are my stats. If I could get myself into the top 10% by the end of the first semester of my senior year could I apply with that rank or would it be too late? Also, can yall tell me what you think my financial aid would be like if I got accepted. One more thing, do you think I would have a chance at Turing Honors for CS or Business Honors? Thanks in advance

Honors--not likely just because of the rank

UT does not look at GPAs at all. And no, most Texas high schools don't use a 7 point scale; in fact, yours is the first I've heard of. I don't know what Turing looks at, but it's a very small program and it's very elite. BHP bases the decision for the most part on rank and SAT score, and the low rank would probably hurt your chances a lot.

You aren't in the top ten percent but you have a pretty high class rank, very good SAT scores, are from a low socioeconomic background, and a very desirable minority group. You are pretty much guaranteed to get in to Natural Sciences.

Income at $20,000 usually means a very nice financial aid package in UT terms. However, there almost certainly will be some loans involved. I know many people who just don't like that fact and chose other schools because of the lower debtload. UT gives loans regardless of income level. However you stand a good chance of getting some grants as well.

I don't know if you've heard of the Terry Foundation Scholarship, but you may have a chance for that and that's pretty much a full ride. Income is a key factor so you would be in the running for that scholarship.

This isn't exactly Harvard or Stanford we are talking about here. Lets be frank, your a minority with a high SAT score, and a good(but not great) rank, you are definitely in to any college other than business as a sure thing. I was 107/787 and I got into engineering with a 1380. You have a better rank and your SAT score kills mine, I essentially had no extracurriculars and you have more APs than I did.

As theloneranger said, the rank hurts your chances at business honors or turing( though there is still a chance), but I think your a pretty much sure thing in anything non-honors. With your SAT scores, I would definitely look at 3rd party scholarships as well. Your chances are much better at getting money from anywhere but UT. They give out a notoriously low amount of scholarships, but given your stats, independent scholarships look exactly what you fit the bill for.

his rank is almost top 10%(13.5%)

I am no expert here, but I think the whole tennischick persona she is putting on, leads me to deduce that he is in fact a she.

hahah....ROFL! ^^

Thanks for all the replies, I was just scared because my mom kept telling me all these stories who were like 1 person away from being in the top 10% and they still didn't get accepted.

I really think you will get in during regular admission, but if by some chance you didn't get in at first, I think that once you bumped yourself up into the top 10% of your class they would let you in if you talked to them in June. I think.

Are you really set on a public Texas school? With your stats you are a great shot at getting into a top private university. And, with your families income would most likely qualify for much better financial aid packages from private institutions - maybe even a full ride.

I'm not set, I just wanted to apply to some schools that I had a good chance of getting into, and I know UT is one of the top public universities.

Yes, you will be accepted, end of story. Now, I am not at all sure if you will get into the business school, and you probably will not make business honors. I think the average HS class rank of those accepted into McCombs is top 2.5% or something extremely high like that, but they also place great value on SAT scores, and yours are significantly higher than the average McC score, so you might have a chance. I was ranked barely inside the top 20% at my HS, and I had a slightly lower SAT than you and I got into UT COLA, so you should have no problem getting in. Good luck! Hope to see you in the business school when I transfer in Fall 09.

Most Likely Yes to regular acceptance.
Definitely Yes to summer acceptance.
Possibly Yes to Business, but don't count on it. It might depend on whether UT knows about your school or not and recognizes you're not in the top 10 percent due to it being competitive. I do know of an instance where it's happened.
Most Likely No to Business Honors. I won't say never, but I really don't think you'll get in BHP due to your rank just being too low for their standards. Seeing your SAT score being so high though, I would say you should be able to do well your freshmen year and have a good shot at transferring into the BHP.
