Bad Grade Impact - CSU's

My son applied to a few CSU’s and has been provisionally admitted to them. His grades and test scores are well within the range of their acceptance criteria, so should be a solid admit. The problem is, he took a dual credit English class (HS and local community college) the first semester of his senior year, misunderstood a due date, and missed turning in a major paper. After losing full credit, he ended up earning a D.

Fortunately, his HS is on a block schedule so he rearranged his second semester to make up for the grade (dropping a non-required class to take English) and will have all admission requirements completed when he graduates. He currently has all A’s for senior year courses, other than the English D.

We contacted the schools to let them know and they wouldn’t say whether this situation will impact his chances of full admission, only generically stating that they will evaluate his transcripts when they are received. My question is, what is the risk that he will have the admission rescinded? Are there contingency plans we can make?

His HS transcript should look fine since the D won’t show on it, but the community college transcript, which is required to be submitted, will show the ugliness. We don’t want this one big screw-up to overshadow his accomplishments and ruin his start at college.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You and your son have done everything you can do at this point. Great news that he was able to juggle his schedule to include that English class, since getting a D and not retaking would be a definite rescinding of his acceptance. Hold onto any documentation you have received from the schools just in case there is an issue later.

Best of luck.

Thank you for your thoughts. We have the email traffic from our communications and they all said our messages would go in his file. My gut says he should be okay, but you just never know. Either way, it’s a tough lesson to learn. Just hope it’s not too tough.

Follow-up question: Does it do any good/is it possible to accept offers from multiple CSU’s and decide after submitting transcripts to see if one school were to rescind but not all? Or does it not work that way?

Thanks!

Take a look at the terms of the conditional acceptance. As long as he meets them and you are transparent, you should be OK.

accepting more than one CSU admission is frowned upon. They probably can’t cross check but, you are making non-refundable deposits and taking someone elses seat. Since they are both CSUs, they probably have very similar recision policies so, if one bounced him, both probably would.

Thank you for your reply, @NCalRent. I appreciate the insight.

Did any of the CSU’s ask for a Mid-year Senior transcript?

If not, I would send all the CSU’s his Mid-year Senior transcript showing that the English class is in-progress and he will complete the English requirement at the end of the year.

@Gumbymom Thanks for the suggestion. They didn’t ask for a mid-year transcript so we will look into that.
