bad grade in chem II

I have received a D in chem II after maintaining a B through out the semester till the final. I made a B+ in the lab and also made a C in calculus 1. I have made a B+ in chem 1 and its lab.

Im will be taking Orgo chem 1 next semester and im preparing for it ahead of time during the summer, along with calc 2.

I know Im required to retake chem 2 and score above a C to satisfy the premed requirment. I was wondering if I could take it later in the future like in the semester after this one. Does it matter when I retake it as long as I score high and how would this be viewed by medical schools?

Thanks for any advice

You have dug a deep hole for yourself. You certainly can not get any more Ds or even Cs and Bs should be few and far between. To get yourself back on track to have a chance for medical school you are going to have to get an A in almost all of your classes from now on.

I have 2 concerns about postponing re-taking Gen Chem 2:

1) at many school you need a passing grade in gen chem 2 before you can advance to OChem

2) the knowledge required to be successful in gen chem2 is cumulative–that is it builds on the material you learned in gen chem 1. If you wait to re-take gen chem 2, you might forget the material you learned in gen chem 1–making your re-take much more difficult than it needs to be

Good point…you might need at least a C- to move on to OChem.

And, very good point about forgetting material. You should take Chem again soon so that you’ll remember what you did know, and more easily learn what you didn’t.

Be very careful to select a prof that has good ratings. You really need an A in Chem II - because med schools will expect that you can get an A after a retake. If you’ll be using the same text as last time, then review over the summer.

Thanks for the responses but Ive already registered for ochem and I know people who have taken gen chem II even though receiving a D in gen chem I. (I go to UGA maybe they’re different)

Im fully aware that I need all As from now on but its just that I wont have time in my schedule next semester would it raise red flags if I took it in less hectic semester. I understood most of the material from gen chem I and II and maintaing an OK grade through out the semester it was only during the final that I wasn’t feeling well.
