Bad grades and ECs. Chances?

Hey, I'm a senior, going to a pretty average high school in a somewhat rural area. I'm having a hard time objectively considering my chances to colleges, as are my parents and friends (obviously, they're biased towards me getting in).

So. Help?

SAT I: 2320 (first and only time taking it)--800 CR, 760 math and writing

SATII: 780 US History. Will take Literature.

Classes: Mostly honors classes, 10 AP classes by end of the year, most rigorous

GPA: 3.81 UW, 4.0 W. ---I got a B/C+ in AP Chem and a B+/B in AP Lang and Comp junior year (this one due to pure laziness and procrastination), as well as two A minuses. So, severe downward trend in grades.

If it helps, I got a 5 on the AP test for Lang and Comp, and my English teacher (who is teaching me this year as well) is going to write a great LOC for me, saying that I'm an awesome writer.

ECs: Basically nothing, except for drawing and writing a lot. Did WYSE for one year.

I'm looking at UChicago, Amherst (got into their DIVOH program thing), William and Mary, Emory, Tufts, Brown, Rice, and WashU.

Should I even try for UChicago (my dream school) at all? Thanks.

By no means are your grades bad! Your stats are good but your EC’s will cause some problems, but clearly you’ve got some artistic talent. I’d recommend finding some way to write about art in your essay. Interview interview interview!!! This is great way for schools to see who you are and what your passions are and I know UChicago and Amherst really consider the interview.

I’d say Brown is a pretty big reach, but not impossible.
UChicago and Amherst are low/mid reaches but you definitely have a chance.
I’m not super familiar with any of the other schools!

There’s no harm in applying to University of Chicago, except for losing the application fee money. It’s a reach, but pursue them. Also try not to pin your hopes on any one school- it sets you up for hurt.
