Bad Grades Because of Medical Issues

I am going to be a senior in high school. I'm really worried that with my grades, I won't get into my top schools (UNH and SUNY Plattsburgh). Since my freshman year I have had severe TMJ and migraines which caused me to miss a lot of school (sometimes even once a week). My junior year I had a 504 plan to help me, but my grades were still low. I even failed chemistry and I ended up with a D or two and B and Cs. I am supposed to have surgery, but still haven't had it yet, and I have had MRIs and CAT scans to try and help, but nothing really has.
My SAT and ACT scores were pretty good (26 on ACT, 1720 on SAT) and I'm hoping that colleges look more at that than my transcript, but I know they consider grades over test scores.
Do I have any chances of getting into my top schools? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? Thanks!

I think it’s not so much finding a school that will take you but finding one that can be flexible with your amount of absenteeism.

I would encourage you to address your health problems (which I’m sure you are trying to do). Some college schedules will make it hard for you to keep up missing that much school and some you may be able to mostly complete work on own time. If those 2 schools are your top ones, meet with an admissions counselor and do some digging into curriculum and class requirements. Also look closely at housing. I would think migraines and bad roommate/dorm would be a bad combination.

There is one thing you can do…Write an essay about your situation right now and how you coped with it(migraines and TMJ)…I know its skeptical but this is the only way I can think of…Also try bumping SAT scores above 2000… Sorry to hear about your migraine…I hope you get this addressed cause it may create more problems for you later… Best of luck mate!!
Cheers…
