Bad grades in Kelley vs good grades in something else

I am currently in the Kelley School of Business, and I'm in my sophomore year. Right now I'm doing very poorly in the Kelley school, and it looks like I'm going to have to retake a class or two next semester and won't be able to take ICORE until spring of my junior year. It's looking like my cumulative gpa is going to be around a 2.5-2.6 at the end of this school year.

Right now I'm trying to make up my mind whether or not I should stay in the Kelley school, or maybe try something else. I'm starting to think that if I'm doing this badly then maybe the kelley school isn't for me. I'm thinking about maybe transferring to spea, or maybe even something completely non-business related. I really have no idea right now.

Does anyone have any advice on what would be better for getting a job after graduating?

Would it look better for me to graduate from Kelley with a pretty bad gpa, or for me to graduate from something less competitive and easier like spea with a better gpa?

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble. What is it that you actually like about “business” and what do you hope to be doing after graduation? It’s hard to give advice when you’re not that specific. SPEA is great, but it’s not for everyone, and sometimes students thinking they can get an easy A are very disappointed. If management is what you’re truly passionate about, then yes, you can get a job through SPEA, but it’s really going to be about your focus in these final two years, what internships you get, etc.

One thing that might interest you is that SPEA is creating a human resources major (more focused on the public sector but it still translates to the private sector), so you may enjoy that, and I’ve heard the students who are in the minor right now tend to do well with job placement following graduation.

— it looks like I’m going to have to retake a class or two next semester and won’t be able to take ICORE until spring of my junior year —

Does this mean that this semester you are taking two Icore prerequisites that you expect a C- or lower in? Are these classes you could take at a community college in summer and transfer to IUB in time to take Icore next Fall? Not taking Icore your fall semester of jr year is not a big deal, depending on your major, whatever that may be. It has no effect at all on majors that do not have a lot of classes that require Icore as a prerequisite.

Also, getting into Kelley is the hard part. Some people do not pass Icore, but the odds of not passing Icore are pretty slim; probably way less than 5% don’t pass one section or more of Icore, and you can always retake the section that you don’t pass. See the grade distribution report for the number of students who did not get the solid C or above last fall in the Icore classes; less than two percent for each Icore course.

[Bloomington Campus Grade Distribution Report](http://registrar.indiana.edu/gradedist/4128_report2a.html#BL-BUS)

Concerning your gpa, you might consider dropping this semester the two Icore prerequisites (I assume that is what the classes are) you are taking now to protect your gpa. Less than solid C in two classes in one semester will probably hurt your cumulative gpa a lot.

Also, think about the grades you will need to raise your gpa during your last two years if you end your first two years with a 2.5 average. You would likely need a 3.7 gpa the last two years to get your gpa to 3.1 at graduatiion, and getting 3.7 in upper-level classes your last two years will be difficult in SPEA and every other school. Considering that, you might want to avoid getting your gpa down to the 2.5 range this semester, maybe by dropping courses that will be C- or lower (in other words, doubly-bad courses that will not only not meet Icore prerequisites and but which will also kill your gpa) and taking in summer at a cc with no effect on your IU gpa. Icore prerequisites that often can be transferred from a cc include finite, calculus, business law, financial and managerial accounting, microeconomics, (and E370 iwhen taken at a regional campus as E270). Use the credit transfer service to see what transfers.

Why do most Kelley students who struggle switch to SPEA? I mean if you majored in business you must have a passion in it or something, why don’t just transfer to another school? IUPUI Kelley School should be a little easier and I assume most of your classes will easily transfer.

Well to answer your questions, the main reason I am in business is because I thought it would be the most practical to get a job after graduation, and I thought I was decently interested in it. As it turns out, I do think I am interested in certain aspects of business, but not all. For example, I really hate crunching numbers and formulas, and I feel like that’s what a lot of the Kelley prerequisites have been so far. I really have no idea what I want to do after graduation. Possibly a business career in the entertainment industry would be something I would like.

And as far as transferring to another IU school, this is not my intention at all as the only reason I came here in the first place is because I was a direct admit to the IU Bloomington Kelley school. I’m from out of state, so to go to a different IU just doesn’t seem like anything out of state students would do.

bthomp1, I don’t think it’s possible for me to simply drop those two classes now. I’ve already taken the finals for them so I don’t think IU lets you drop classes after that. Yes I am going to receive a C- in one and a D+ in another, so they will not satisfy my ICORE prerequisites. At this point if I am going to stay in Kelley, I will have to retake these classes in the fall to get a C or above, so that I can take ICORE in the spring. Also, in my other classes, I am pretty much going to receive all C’s and C+'s, barely satisfying the minimum for getting into ICORE.

I don’t even know if I’ll have a 2.5. Fortunately I can use the extended X petition to wipe out these two grades and use my retake score to re-calculate my gpa after I have retaken them. Even so, I don’t know if this is even going to be enough to get my gpa to a respectable level.

At this point I just really don’t know what to do as I’ve already hurt my gpa so much. I don’t know if I should just try to stick it out in the Kelley school since I’m already in it, or I don’t know if I should get into an easier program. I don’t even know if I should stay at IU considering my parents are paying all of this money for out of state tuition, and I’m doing so badly.

Any advice would really be appreciated. Thank you for your replies so far.

May I ask what two classes that are giving you trouble?

I only ask this because I’m going into my sophomore year and want to know what to watch out for.
