I really want to get into UT Austin (both my parents and many of my relatives went here so legacy?), but I'm worried that my class rank will hurt me. Does anyone know if admissions offices actually pay attention to which high school you've attended? I go to a very competitive school (one of the top schools in Texas) so would that also factor in?

I know my ranking and GPA are not too good. I was just being stupid, especially in my sophmore year, and killed my grades. I'm hoping to bring them back up in senior year though.

I probably want to major in engineering or business.

Since I'm not really an exceptional student, I'm very confused as to which school I will be able to get into. If anyone has any recommendations on schools that I should apply to, please do let me know.

Oh and also I'm Asian (mainly Chinese, but I also have roots in Myanmar and Cambodia...if that matters).

Thank you for your time! Please let me know if I need to add anything else!

There’s over 50,000 students applying to UT every year so they don’t really pay attention to what high school you attended unless its mentioned in your personal statement, recs, etc. Engineering and Business are the two most selective programs at UT. A friend of mine (from TX) was just shy of automatic admission and had a 2010 on SAT was waitlisted. Its crazy. He then received a full ride to TCU engineering and admittance to the Honor’s College. UT is becoming a go-to target (but its really kind of a reach) for a lot of engineering and business majors, especially since McCombs and Cockrell boast top ten undergrad programs. Overall, you have a good chance, but its really just that- a chance. I wish you the best of luck, especially since I’m hoping to be UT’19, go Longhorns!

Is your unweighted GPA below a 3.4? If so, you don’t qualify for UCs. Nonresidents have to have a UW GPA of 3.4 or above, and residents have to have a UW GPA of 3.0 or above. Also, you’re not allowed to have any grades below a C.

UT - low reach, A&M- low reach. Most UCs- reach

The UCs do NOT require an unweighted 3.4 for out-of-state applicants. They require a 3.4 minimum as calculated using their own weighting formula. My son (a NJ resident) was accepted into Davis and UCSD with an unweighted GPA of less than 3.4 (his UC-weighted GPA was ove 4.0).

Calculate your UC weighted GPA using the following link: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc</a>
Since you are OOS, only your AP courses (up to 8 Semesters) for your 10-11th grade can be used for your Honors Class points. Your SAT/ACT is competitive for UCR/UCM/UCSC/UCI and maybe UCD/UCSB. It is on the low side for UCSD/UCB/UCLA. For the UC’s, GPA is king so if your UC GPA is 4.0+ you are good for all but the upper tier UC’s (UCLA/UCB/UCSD). Also, can you afford the $55K price tag for the UC’s?? Very little to no financial aid for OOS students.

Your percentile is 66%, which is pretty good considering you attend a competitive school. Most colleges take consideration of the rigor of the secondary school you attended to. Plus, those are pretty good statistics although the ECs are pretty average if you’re looking at the top schools in the country.

They look at upward trends also about your sophomore year, I am working on that as well. I live in California and unless if you apply to a UC that has been your dream school since you were a child or social pressures, do NOT even bother. Apply to Berkeley or Los Angeles, honestly…they are the only UCs that have enough endowment to not care about budget cuts. People all around my school are saying that UCs and CSUs in California are indebt right now and they are facing HUGE budget cuts still. They are seeking money for OOS applicants so that they can get more money (not saying that its their priority to get money). You must have a legit reason on why applying AND that you can afford it too, the average annual pay to go to a UC is a whooping 55K. As for the statistics, calculate the UC GPA, and your UC GPA needs to be at least a 3.4.

Continuing on, in my opinion.

UT Austin: High match
A&M: Match
Elon: Reach
UC: Idk cause there are 9 of them and you didn’t specify.

Good luck!
