bad grammar/spelling on the board

You forget that Ivies have huge resources, etc.

Yes, huge resources. Nice buildings.

Yes, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

... my god, it's called succintness! haven[t u ever played an online game? such as counterstrike? people misspell things on purpose all the time for effect and it's funny too

example

oMG, liek r j00 some kind of faygot?

Translation: Oh my god. Are you like some kind of faggot?

CS is full of losers lol

are you calling me a loser?

"You would think that people have better things to worry about (i.e, themselves) than how someone is typing on an online message board."

haha, why don't you read the entire the entire thread next time? How is it you determined that I'm worried?

"And I would hardly call anyone here a "geek." Geeks are not aspiring lawyers and CEO's in 50 extracurricular activities. Most geeks write fanfic, while time away on the playstation or some rpg or compulsively collect music."

Is it more accurate to call the majority of people here over achievers? I don't mean that in a negative light at all. . . Some of them tend to bother me, but that doesn't make then inherently bad people.

"perhaps they expend all their capacity for “intelligent discussion, large vocabularies, and even some highly nerdy topics” during school and come to cc to release the cretin within. oh how risqué wallow in debauchery on a college discussion forum, I know. but that’s what makes everyone such wonderful, wonderful geeks. those who do devote their spare time to such scholarly pursuits seem more suited for the beautiful academic torture of uchicago anyway."

What scholarly pursuits are the geeks pursuing?

"... my god, it's called succintness! haven[t u ever played an online game? such as counterstrike? people misspell things on purpose all the time for effect and it's funny too"

Well... I think you kind of mashed two ideas together there. Why are spelling mistakes succinct? Typing D or S in place of "daughter" or "son" respectively is succinctness... "succintness" is not. Now, this wasn't an attack on you, everyone makes spelling mistakes (I tend to forget small words when I'm not thinking).

I have no problem with abbreviations (I don't like them, but I don't consider them spelling mistakes) or "l33t." I have no problem with people typing poorly if they are just ignorant of how to type, but I think Harvard-bound overachievers not using "good" correctly is ironic.

I think your mom is ironic.

"I think your mom is ironic."

Definitely the funniest thing I've read on here, without competition. No joke.

"dont talk to your mother like that, she is not an iron"

You were worried enough to make a thread about it! Worried doesn't always imply apprehension/aggitation in a negative way. Do you care what the weather is going to be tomorrow? Then you are worried about the weather. Anyways, the majority of people's threads on CC can be read and understood regardless of the spelling and grammar.

*"Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe" *

nah, I just thought it was funny.

HOLY SHIZZLE! I actually posted that on another forum too... incredible!

I'm guilty of randomly not-capitalizing my posts, but I think how you write reflects how you speak. I'd like to treat the comments of all with respect, and part of showing respect is taking the time to properly spell and read-over your posts.

Some people might consider this to be rather stupid, because after all, this is an online forum, and its not likely that bad spelling/grammar will impact one's life in any shape or form. But if you want to be taken seriously and look/sound intelligent, having proper syntax will advance that desire.

Btw: what are all these questions about being "beaten up?" Are the questioners laboring under the delusion that most CC-ers are bespectacled nerds who are regularly demeaned because of their lack of social skills? Please. Classical labeling is so last-century. I can debate T.S. Eliot and make dirty jokes in physics and calculus, but the last time I was in a schoolyard scuffle was in second grade.

And I left the big, athletic kid (a head taller, 20 lbs heavier) crying on the ground with a bloody nose, black eye and twisted ankle.

Live and let live. Just cease with the inanities please.

Fo' shizzle, bro'.

uc_benz, that was seriously the most amazing thing I've discovered in a long time..!

EDIT: long time = a month

This board is better than many of the others on the internet that I've been to or go to in terms of grammar and spelling rules.

Oh, and "I'm doing good" is a pet peeve of mine as well ;) However on the internet people have a lot more free rein with grammar and spelling--the way I type on the 'net is way different than how I would, say, write a paper for school.

This thread amuses me greatly

do you get beat up a lot in school?

[/quote]

I would assume so

we understand what each other are trying to say, dont we? as long as communication isnt skewed, which it isnt(well, sometimes it is) we will be okay.

uc_benz that was insane. nice

"we understand what each other are trying to say, dont we? as long as communication isnt skewed, which it isnt(well, sometimes it is) we will be okay."

Since when have you guys been satisfied with just the bare minimum?

"uc_benz that was insane. nice"

haha, you hadn't seen that before? I saw it a year ago or something. Pretty crazy indeed.
