bad HS record, worth going to CC and shooting for ivies?

I have a really bad HS record. I am finishing up junior year and my GPA is a 2.0.

Honestly, it is because I didn't care but I have changed my atitude. I doubt any colleges will seriously look at me at all.

What I am thinking of doing though is looking at a bunch of schools this summer. Most of them out in Ohio and Kentucky.

I am seriously considering attending The Ohio State University-Columbus.

From what I hear, as long as you have 30 credits+(1 year) under your belt, you are golden. They accept 84% of transfers according to college board. Also, after 30 credits they do not need your HS stuff at all. All they need is your college transcript.

Basically, I want you guys to tell it to me straight.

Would going to a CC for the full two years and busting my butt get me into an Ivy League school?

I plan on attending medical school.

I am actually extremely smart, I just haven't put forth much effort. I guess it doesn't matter much at this point.

But yeah, is it worth all the extra headache?

If not, then let me ask you guys this:

Would it be much better for me to just finish up HS, do a year at CC, get a 4.0 and just transfer out to OSU-Columbus, University of Kentucky, etc.?

It just seems so much easier to just do it that way.

If you have very high SATs/ACT it is possible but not likely. Ivies will still be considering high school record to some extent. If you really hit it out of the park with grades, EC’s and recs, sure, it could happen.

But for med school an ivy really doesn’t matter… I’d put the energy into doing extremely well wherever you are with activities focused on med school admission rather than another college admissions process.

Thanks. That is pretty much what I thought.

Your right after thirty credits in college ohio state doesn’t look at high school grades or test scores. So if you get above like a 3.3 or 3.4 and write a good essay you should get in as a transfer. The problem with ohio state is that you have to have completed 30 credits at the time you apply to not have to submit those things which means you can’t apply spring term of your freshman year and not submit highschool records. And you better make sure you start to get motivated now, its gonna be harder then you think to just kick it into gear into college. I hear a lot of kids say that and I only sometimes see it actually happen.

hey jef,

yeah, just as long as you bust your butt for 2 years - it would be easier to transfer into an ivy after 2 years rather than just one. also, you can use your essays to say how much you improved. also, make sure you really excel at commcollege, because they’ll be looking for that.

also, look at cornell - they’re really transfer-friendly, and they’re still a great school…

I do know of a girl who got into Harvard after going to a CC.

@ the columbus campus, the application deadline for domestic transfer students is

June 1, 2009

This is for the FALL quarter of this year.

Now, let us just assume it stays this way when I apply as a transfer.

My CC finishes May 15 so would applying on the 17th be a bad idea?

Would I get rejected if I didn’t apply earlier?

Admissions

This is what I am looking at here.

I would be fine though, right?

schools like harvard and other ivies and LACs have really REALLY low transfer rates because the retention of students is so high.

focus on med school admissions rather than trying to get into an Ivy. do well at your four year. you should just transfer to a good state school. besides, you’ll need to save all of your debt for med school, anyway.

Ohio state does admissions for transfers on a rolling basis… basically you would probably have less of a chance applying then then if you applied earlier, but if you are a very well qualified canidate then you should be fine. I applied there as my back up school in mid april and got accepted within a week of filling out the application.

Harvard doesn’t accept transfers any more. (Neither does Princeton).

If you want to go to med school an Ivy may not be your best route. First, it’s much harder to be the top of your class. Second, a lot of Ivys have cracked down on grade inflation, when med school admissions want the best GPA and the best MCAT scores. Third, is extremely difficult for anyone to transfer in.

^^Really?
Harvard can’t accept transfers this year because it’s overcrowded (that’s what I heard at least) or it WON’T accept any transfers from now on? Which one?

They haven’t accepted them for two years running and there isn’t currently plans to start accepting them next year… i’m sure they will eventually open them up again it just depends on when

I found out. According to an article in the Harvard Crimson from last year they won’t accept transfers for the next two years, so there is a chance (if there is space) that they will be able to accept transfers in 2011.

Let’s say for OSU I am finishing up my second semester. I finish in May but it is April. They want 30 for not HS transcript or SAT scores.

Let’s say I am a freshman and I took 15 credits first semester and am about to finish another 15 and will finish the year with 30. Will OSU count me as someone with 30 credits in this case?

no, I tried this… I actually had 29 credits already completed at the time of applying and I asked if they could make an exception for me because I am currently completing a semester of 16 credits so by the time I got into OSU I would have 45 semester credits. And they still said you can wait to apply until your semester grades are on your transcript or you can send in high school and your ACT (I didn’t take SAT). So you see they are pretty stringent on that stuff. I knew I would get in either way I just didn’t want to go through the hassle of going to counselor offices.

That is stupid. I just searched my CC’s website and the last day is May 11. Would I have to wait till then to apply? If I want to start there as a sophomore?

I just do not know if I would be able to get in as a sophomore because I would be applying so close to the deadline…

ughhh

you could apply for winter transfer to get in in the middle of your sophmore year… that is probably your best bet

I’d rather not. Honestly, at this point I am just thinking of taking 25 credits in a semester and just applying for the second half of freshman year (spring).

I can handle it. Honestly, I just didn’t give a crap as a freshman and I was in dumb classes which screwed me over.

25 is a lot though. I will have to think about it.

you still need 5 more credits?

and i’ve known a lot of people and I have never known someone who took more then 22 credits and the person I knew who took 22 credits went from having a 3.76 gpa to a 3.61 after that semester

I can take classes the summer after I graduate next year. Sorry, I forgot to include that.
