bad idea?

Hey guys Hope you are all enjoying the warm weather

i have a question, and im not sure if it makes much sense so im just gonna try to explain it the way i see things and so you guys can tell me what you think.
Okey so i wanted to apply to a summer program at barnard one because i feel that i wanted to take a liberal arts class since most of my classes is science and math and i felt that since Barnard is my dream school it would make sense to take there that way i also get a feeling of the school, you know, But since i am lower middle class and an immigrant i took the cheaper program which is one week intensive Precollege @ Barnard and i got 2/3 grant.

After i got in and accepted(enthusiastically =]) my counselor called me and told me that NYU Summer program wants to have students from my HS participating and that she wanted to recommend me to it since she liked my transcript records, NYU was also going to provide me with a 4000 scholarship, so i accepted and a week ago i found out that yes i was chosen along with a classmate to go to the program, which starts the same day as Barnard, is in the afternoon and lasts six weeks.

Now my question is when i apply to Barnard and they see this in my record that i participated in both programs if i chose to do so, will they take it badly. Is it a good idea to attend this NYU program when i am also attending the Barnard one which is one week long?

P.S i wanna let you guys know that i decided to go for the NYU program after knowing i was already in Barnard because i feel that i should take every opportunity this country provides me and not because i want to “impress” colleges.

Should i not do the NYU program, do you think this will look bad to Barnard.

(sorry if you think its a stupid question)

"JF

I was going to tell you that I thought it was too much to try to do both -- how can you spend all day at Barnard and be at NYU at the same time? But the I saw that Barnard's program is in the mornings, 9:30 am - 12:30 p.m. --- and since that is only for one week, it looks like you can manage it, depending on start time for the afternoon sessions at NYU. It will probably take you about 45 minutes to get from Barnard down to NYU (I'm figuring in walking & waiting for the subway as well the length of the ride) -- so if NYU starts a 1 pm, you'd have to cut out of Barnard early.... but if NYU starts at 2:00 pm you'd be fine, as long as you are happy with a grab & go lunch from a deli or sidewalk vendor.

You'll probably be sacrificing part of the Barnard experience, as you won't be able to participate in any activities or socializing outside of class.... but if you feel that's what you want to do, I'd say, go for it. Also, if the NYU program offers housing, then you might be able to save some money by changing to "commuter" status with the Barnard program -- you'll just need an earlier start in the morning from NYU to get up to Morningside Heights. (Unless, of course, you already live in NY and will be commuting to both locations.... in which case you probably don't need my advice on how to get to either).

And no, Barnard will NOT hold it against you.

Calmom Thank you so for your help you even tried to put yourself in my shoes =]

Yes Barnard Precollege Program finishes at 12:30 and I got accepted into a course for NYU That starts at 1:00 (i think its posible to make it in time, rushing of course). Yes i wont be able to get everything out of the Barnard experience like you said but the NYU course is only Monday tuesday and friday from 1pm-3pm So i can participate in the activities on Wednesday and friday.I will probably be at Barnard super early like 8 since i want to see the campus and get the most i can out of it.

It would have been nice to start a course that starts later, but when my counselor told me to chose my top 3 courses most didnt interest me as much as the one i chose and the ones that interested me where late like at 5:00 pm, I am from NJ and have to commute almost 2 hrs and i also want to get the best of my summer you know.

So you really think Barnard wont see it as a bad thing, thats a relieve =]

i appreciate the help, calmom, thanks

If I may "chime in" here, I do NOT think Barnard adcoms will think badly of your attending an NYU summer program.

My d discovered Barnard while attending a three week summer dance intensive at NYU the summer after her junior year of hs. She heard from some of the other dancers about Barnard, took a day off from her classes, and went uptown to visit. She fell in love with the place and just finished her second year there!

Congrats on your accomplishments so far....best to you!

Thats Awesome!

Thank You
