So I'm a '14 who just found out that I did a lot worse than I expected in my econ 1 class. Instead of getting an A- like expected, I got a B. I really like econ and want to take more econ classes. However, I really don't want to get another B (or even worse) in a harder econ course. Is econ 1 a weed out course or is it a course that just lets you know if you're not meant for econ or not? Thanks.

Hey I’m a 14 too so I can’t say for sure (I placed out). But I’m told it’s a weeder. And my uga said it was the hardest course she ever took. I took 39 this term and it really wasn’t bad at all. Heads up, econ 10 is also kind of weeder-ish and econ 21 is too (if you get the indian guy; doyle is ok). Take stat in a different subject if you want to continue down econ and best of luck to you!

My sister who went to D and works for an IBank says that if that is what you want to do, take all your easy courses in everything else early to build your GPA b/c a lot of the recruiters have cutoffs for GPA. You can declare it as a major but don’t really dive in until as late as possible so you can get an internship off the high GPA. She also said Econ 26 ruined a lot of people’s soph. summers but all that was a few years ago so I don’t know if anything I’ve set is still helpful.

I’ve heard that it is a weeder, and a huge grind. (Which IMHO is stupid, because it discourages people from just taking one econ course to learn about the subject if they don’t want to major in econ.) What, exactly, are they trying to prove?

Are you taking it with Curtis? If so, I might be a bit worried, but I’d continue taking a few more upper level classes. If you don’t perform at a higher level in those, you might want to reconsider taking the econ track.

If you’re taking it with Giummo, don’t worry. Take some upper level classes, and see how those go.

econ 1 was one of the easier classes i took, but i only took one other econ class (just needed the SOC distribs).

\contrarian

i’m took it with curtis. i was doing fine until i took the final. but isn’t curtis known for giving hard tests? what would be the next econ class to take after econ 1?

Econ 10 or 21 if you want to major.
However to get a feel for how most econ courses would be, you could also jump into any number of other courses (quite a few are open to take after you’ve got 1; that’s how I took 39 this term).
